On a mission (or lab accident) Alex ends up getting poisoned with no known cure. Poor Alex is stuck with a lot of pain and a high fever. In his delirium he keeps calling out for his two dads and it doesn't take the gang long to figure out who he means. Unable to calm him down alone, Charles seeks out Erik's help. And Erik is, of course, unable to deny a chance to see Charles help one of his kids (because he totally knows their his kids).

-sigh-
that's hard. this is basically the second time Alex lost a parent, isn't it? maybe its worst than the first time around because this time his father isn't dead, but chose to be away from him. goodness, i can't even glance at the charles/erik in this without cringing at the collateral damage.

I would almost think it would be easier if Erik were dead instead of just having left of his own choice. So yeah, it's a tough thing for all the kids and for Charles and Erik as well. I like to imagine that Erik believes his way will save them--that he has to protect them by doing what they won't/can't. It's still hard.

god, this is just like that temporary Christmas truce during WW1 (I think it was WW1; my memory fails me) where they had a ceasefire for one night and resumed killing each other the next day.
Other pairings are totally up to the author!
