He rose from the simple cot and thin blanket into silence and darkness. The light switch, like most everything else in the room, was cold and made of metal. There were no windows here, but artificial light poured yellow down from the recess lighting fixtures as he pressed his bare feet onto the slick steel floor.
He showered in the adjoining room. He shaved, washed his face clean, dried it with one of the plush towels Emma was so fond of. There was no mirror. He had no use for it (didn’t want to see -), not when he could control the metallic blade so finely as to never nick his skin. He pulled his clothes on neatly, smoothed his hands down the lapels of his blazer

He rose, pressed his bare feet against cold steel. He showered, shaved, and dressed. With the helmet on, the coin and bullet in his pocket, he stepped into the sunlight outside his quarters.
For a moment, he considered his actions, no longer solely concerned with the haunts of his past, nor with the possibility of the future he hoped to shape.
Down the hallway resided the culmination of both, within this present. He sighed and stood there in the doorway.
Some men could handle this sort of situation with aplomb.
Erik usually handled it with sarcasm, his rage and guilt lingering there at the outskirts.
And at times like these, on mornings when the silence felt heavier, stiller after months and months, he thought of Shaw with his sterile instruments and experimentation methods. Thoughts of sharp tools and the metallic scent of blood began to creep into his mind with nothing (no one) else to detract from such things

“Erik,” came a voice behind him.
Faster still. And there, finally, Erik felt the slightest resistance to his ministrations. He repressed a smile ( ... )
