Charles, Eating Disorder anonymous June 20 2011, 19:22:49 UTC
Charles' life has always felt horribly out of control. He couldn't control his abusive home life and for a long time couldn't control his powers. One of the things he did to cope was strictly monitoring his diet, since that was one of the few things he could actually decide for himself.

Whether or not Raven knows is up to anon. I would like to see how Erik (who, having nearly starved to death in the camps, just can't comprehend why someone would choose to starve themselves) responds to this.

Besides that, just take the idea and run with it, anons. Charles/Erik is fine, but not necessary btw. (Just try to be sensitive. This is a delicate topic.)

Oh, Jesus. I may do this. Except I'm terrified of getting it wrong. No promises, but I'm going to think on this a while and see if I can get it going anywhere. In the meantime, seconded.

Have a little faith in yourself anon!

If you decide to write this I'm sure you'll do an excellent job. (No pressure, though, honestly. Only write this if you feel comfortable.)

Trigger warning for eating disorders. The control element will probably come more into play later, too. Like I said above, I'm scared of messing this up. If anyone thinks I have, I urge you to tell me. Thanks.

At first, he doesn't do it on purpose. Charles is young enough that he doesn't even have words for what his power does yet, though it's instinctual enough that he knows what it is. This turns out to be a poor combination. It almost seems to him like it would be easier if he had no clue what the thoughts in his head were, where they came from: if he could simply let them sit as background noise, gentle and unimportant.

But he does know, and once he knows he can't help but think about them. It's overwhelming at times, not quite a headache, more like a presence behind his eyes that pulses in a way that makes him feel ill. Sometimes the content of what he catches from other people makes him feel ill as well, in entirely different ways, and he hates that even more ( ... )

OP here.

I'm so glad you decided to write this!

I know you're nervous but so far this is excellent. You're doing an amazing job with the slow progression of the behavior and really, you're just doing an amazing job with everything. I'm loving you're young Charles and I can't wait to see how this unfolds.

Again, warning for eating disorders.

When they move to Oxford, Raven makes half-joking remarks about 'fleeing' and Charles reflects on the ways it feels like a new start, as cliche as it might sound. It's not quite fleeing, not exactly, because he could never leave his entire life behind. Not if it meant leaving Raven. But in Oxford he feels ready to try again with his life, it can't be denied, and this time with a far greater idea of just what he is going to do, as well as how he's going to do it.

His mind is a different place entirely compared to childhood, ordered and pragmatic, something Charles has come to realise is not a priority for most other people. Living around so many others in close proximity, young people that are full of life and distractions and god knows what else, is less of a challenge than he had feared. Though it takes effort to keep his mind in check, Charles in turn allows himself to take a certain level of pride when he succeeds, which is much more often than not these days.

There are systems within systems ( ... )

OP here. This continues to be wonderful. I like the transition between a spur of the moment coping mechanism to a very strict and organized method of coping. Charles' control issues are beautifully rendered and the fact that Raven worries is wonderful and heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time.

I'm so glad you decided to take up this story. You're doing an amazing job!

As always, trigger warning for eating disorders.

Things happen so quickly after Oxford.

Between the CIA and Erik and Cerebro, and a million other details that overtake his every waking moment because it's all so urgent and everything has to be done now apparently, he scarcely has to think about his schedule because there's no time for anything beyond it. At the rate they're working nobody notices anything unusual. Meals are for people without work so important as what they're doing here, as far as he can see. Charles knows he looks tired, but then, running around the country collecting promising mutants will do that to a man and beyond a few nagging orders to try and get a full nights' sleep for once, Raven doesn't comment. Erik seems uninterested for his own part, and Charles doubts it's something that particularly registers for him. The man himself seems to be what Charles might call utilitarian, doing precisely what is necessary to function and then moving onto the next task he has.

It's good. It feels right, and thrilling, and new ( ... )

OP here.

This continues to be absolutely fantastic!

I love that Raven is trying to help/understand what's wrong and how Charles is pushing her away in order to keep his secrets.

And this: It's easier than having to explain that the man purportedly teaching them control isn't capable of doing it himself without jumping through hoops, so he leaves it be.

I love the ways you show how he's still so desperate for control but deeply afraid of anyone realizing just how lost he is.

And Erik. I love that at first he doesn't notice at all, and then when he does, oh, his bitterness is perfect. I suppose that things will come to a head soon?

I can't wait anon!

Thank you again for this amazing fill. I am so happy you decided to write this!

dude. Erik needs to do something.
I don't even know what. I remember when being anorexic was in at my school (along with being bi) and I was trying out the angsty fad--and then my mother cottoned on to what I was doing and kept picking up food from my fave fastfood joints to get me to eat. So I never really actually went hungry... It's really funny looking back on it.
