Charles/Erik, AU, They don't meet until they're much older

This is an odd request, but I'd like a fill where Erik and Charles go on to be important mutant advocates (in their own very different ways), but while they know of each other, they've never actually met.
Cue them eventually meeting at some big function celebrating a mutant legislative victory (or something). They hit it right off and skip out on the celebration/rally in order to play chess and have long discussions. In other words, they fall in love...
Bonus: They're old and wise enough to see the places where their visions align and actually listen to each other and compromise, even if they don't always see eye to eye.

::runs from the old Holmes fandom to hug you close:: I THOUGHT YOU WERE GONE FOREVER
Seriously, though, it's good to see you playing in fandom again! I love your writing, as ever, and this is a brilliant start. I absolutely adore your characterizations, particularly Magneto and his awesome sense of entitlement. I can't wait for more!

You do not understand my utter GLEE at seeing this filled! And by a fantastic author! I loved this prompt so much I didn't dare hope it would be filled! I will be refreshing this multiple times a day. Guuuuh. I am so excited. This is already so good! *flails*

I'm so impressed with the awkwardness you've created for these two--there's an awe that each of them has for the other, but also the potential for all that power to work together.

Yes yes oh god yes my buttons you are pushing them
Politician!Erik (or at least, in this case, Erik suffering to be around politicians) is a weak spot of mine. Mystique being all second-in-command and being quickly efficient was awesome.
//Magneto scowled and then took perverse delight in interrupting them.//
Hee, I guess Erik finds joy in cockblocking in any universe.
I'm very intrigued with your Charles. What happened to make him such a hermit? What caused the accident with Moira? What made him decide to break his self-imposed exile? And what're the mutant-human relations in this world like? What exactly does the Brotherhood do? What're the other X-Men's backstories?
Oh and yeah, the bit with the tweed was cute. I love how flustered they make each other.

Oh my gawd this is hitting all the kinks I didn't even know I had. Wonderful world-building, really intriguing versions of Erik and Charles, mysterious pasts and Hank and Raven and Rogue and general AWESOMENESS.
I would read hundreds of pages of this, I already know. *flail*
