...I'm realizing after writing this whole basically-an-outline monster out that this is probably along the lines of what I'd end up writing if I could tackle one of the serious-consideration-of-the-time's-taboo-on-homosexuality prompts, but uh, I don't feel up to that right now, so here it as a prompt >> << >>

Given the time-scale I suppose this might have to be AU or stretch the timeline a bit, but oh well--

As their friendship deepens, Charles realizes that he's fallen irrevocably in love with Erik. However, he stays silent and determines to remain Erik's platonic friend only. He doesn't seem to have fully developed the ethics of staying-out-of-people's-heads at this age, so it's not that he hasn't peeked and doesn't know what Erik thinks and feels--it's that he has looked at some point, either to deliberately peek at whether it's reciprocated or because he was already in there for some other reason, training maybe, and it's not reciprocated. Erik cares about Charles deeply and intensely, but the thought of him as a lover hasn't
