After the end of the movie, Charles doesn't have sex any more due to issues he has about his injury (psychological rather than physical, probably). Somehow he finds himself "riding along" with Erik's sexual experiences in his dreams/half awake at night. Erik knows, at least after that first time, and though Charles would back off, Erik almost encourages Charles to do this whether or not they ever expressly "speak" about it (which they don't in person because they're enemies now anyway).
The only thing is, there are some experiences that Erik doesn't let Charles in for, and Charles can sense that. He respects that and doesn't push to "see" them, but one night he can't help it. What he sees shocks him: Erik's sex that night -- and those other blocked nights -- was with a man.
The realization that Erik is attracted to men ends up changing everything, and somehow they find their way back to each other, despite having been "enemies" for a while. humanity.
