AU world where mutation has been revealed to the world, but not necessarily accepted. Charles is an unlucky kid caught in the wrong place and the wrong time and gets blamed for a serious crime. A secret black ops organization headed by Sebastian Shaw fakes Charles's death and recruits him to be a mutant spy/assassin. In the training facility, Charles meets Shaw's top agent, Erik Lensherr, who wants his freedom and revenge.
