Chumship doesn't have to be about trust. It's funny how different that whole "making close chums" process is over there. The way I see it, it's better to have a few close chums to entrust your horrible dark secrets with, and just a bunch of random chums to bullshit with. because most people would rather stifle exposing them as the liars they are, than outright saying "dude you're making up shit again, stop it!" in a joking way.
