As a child growing up in Huntsville, Alabama (the "Rocket City") I wanted to be an astronaut as well. I remember many trips to the Space and Rocket Center, and was always fascinated, no matter how many times I'd been before. So many of my relatives worked for NASA, or subcontractors: My grandfather helped design the shuttle wings, my Great Uncle trained those who would later spacewalk, my 2nd cousin worked on propulsion...etc. One day in 1979 I was playing in my bedroom when the whole house started to shake and I could hear a distant roar just over the mountain near my house. As it grew louder, I sprinted outside and looked to the top of the mountain just in time to see a low-flying 747 with a very special passenger on board...Space Shuttle Columbia. It was flying low and slow...right above me, lurching through the air with a deafening roar. I will NEVER forget it. I was determined to be a fighter pilot and astronaut as well until my vision went 20/40 at the age of 16. My cousin-in-law's father is a Department Head at NASA ( ... )
