Have any of you used a laptop or a netbook or ipod for your reception music instead of a DJ? How did it work out? Do you have any advice about it?

I used an iPod for my reception. We didn't do dancing or anything, so it was just background music. It worked out fairly well. The only thing that I would watch for is to make sure that you choose music that is recorded at similar volumes. You don't want to have some songs that are barely audible and some that are blaring. Hope that helps and good luck~

I was going to do this for my wedding, however we decided against it and ended up getting a DJ even though we didn't budget for it. It really helped out a lot better because there was no way anyone would have wanted to be in charge of keeping songs going.
The DJ helped keep everything rounded out and kept everything moving along in our event which worked out so much better than we could have hoped for.

Similar situation. I've seen too many weddings that have an iPod where people feel free to change in the middle of the song, or something out of place comes up, etc.

We had a DJ who was going to do it at a discounted rate, but we just found out that we can't. Because we had him, we hadn't budgeted for more, and now we're stuck :(

My friend used her ipod at her wedding a couple years ago. It worked out nicely. Just make a huge playlist so you don't have to keep running back and forth.

I used an iPod at our wedding in July. It was perfect. We made a playlist, we double checked it, it was great. No one fiddled with it at all, we just had one of the groomsmen start it for the first dance and then we were off to the races!

This is similar to what we had planned. We created similar playlists to go for different times throughout the evening. I had read about lots of other brides having a lot of sucess with the ipod thing and so I was really excited about it ( ... )

oh yeah! We also had to set up a microphone separately so that our MC could announce us. That is the other thing that DJs usually provide and you have to provide it for yourself if you don't have a dj.
