Indeed I don't even look for things like gender or appearance when I'm considering adding someone. One of the best things about LJ is that it can just be about what the entries and the comments tell us about each other.
As for the last question, I don't think I have any fb contacts who are LJ friends who aren't already in the group. :)
I had a feeling that many people would vote or comment as you have. Personally, it is important to me to have an idea in my mind of who I'm communicating with, as I feel that interaction and friendships on LiveJournal are very much like interaction and friendships in real life. Without knowing someone's sex and having an idea of what they look like, it feels somewhat random and impersonal to me.
I do have contacts on Facebook whom I originally got to know on LiveJournal, and have sent some of them requests to join the LJ group on Facebook. No takers so far though, and my efforts to persuade people to return by asking them directly have met with little success either. I don't understand it. Surely Facebook isn't, by any stretch of the imagination, better than LiveJournal? It's a bloody dreadful site!
In the olden LJ days, it used to drive me nuts not knowing whether the author was male or female... I remember that with interest now because I don't even think about it. There are people(?) who's journals I've been reading for years who may very well be horny-toed frogs for all I know. And until your poll, I hadn't even thought about it in years.
Haha! I'm sure some of my LJ friends are horny-toed frogs. Or pot-bellied pigs! I am aware that I'm perhaps being excessively picky by expecting people to have a picture of themselves, and although I have been prepared to add people who aren't willing to reveal themselves in all their glory, I would rather have an idea of what they look like for the reasons I mentioned in my comment to minnesattva. I think it makes interaction feel more personal and closer to real-life conversation.
