Spinning

Sometimes when Reki looked at Balmung, he could feel his life spinning out of his control.

This week it was the cherry blossom festival. Balmung had been adding daily to the burden of tasks resting on Reki's shoulders. There was always something new to be dealt with; today it was pavillions for the players to rest under while they looked at the blossoms. Tomorrow there would be something new, and again the day after.

Reki would finish it all, of course. That was what he did. It was what he was good at.

This was his life, he realized. Swept along with the whirlwind that was Balmung, he could no more escape than a leaf caught in a particularly exuberant fall breeze. The spinning was inevitable.

Sometimes Reki wondered: Without Balmung, would he be moving at all?

---

Balmung had always felt like he was spinning.

It was this feeling that kept him constantly in motion, trying to counteract his instinctual sense that the world was moving on without him.

He threw himself into his work, into the creation and regulation of another world, one where he could not be left behind. Then he pretended to himself that it was helping.

The pretending was easiest on days like today. The World was warm and the weather was mild, with just the slightest stirring in the air allowing the cherry blossoms to be shown off to their greatest effect as they fell.

Balmung watched them spin, and wondered if flower petals could feel lost.

---

Balmung found Reki sitting under one of the brightly-colored pavillions which were dotted about the area. He settled himself beside his assistant, and Reki's silence enveloped him, companionable and comforting. Balmung tilted his head to look at the man beside him, but Reki was gazing thoughtfully at the swirling sakura petals.

At last, Balmung spoke. "The blossoms are beautiful this year," Carefully, casually, he placed his hand on Reki's. "You've done a wonderful job."

Reki turned to him, surprise clear on his features. For a moment, Balmung thought he had made a mistake, but then Reki smiled, his face shining briefly before he looked away. Then his hand moved under Balmung's, shifting palm-up to lace their fingers together.

That was when Balmung realized that the spinning had stopped.

--end--
