Title: Brutal Love
Author: Molly
Pairing: Billie/Mike
Summary: “I think I'm ready to go back to California.”
Note: Oh, my God. I swore I would never post this. It's been four years since I have dared to release my writing out into the world. And yet, here I am, screaming into silence, as the Green Day fanfiction community is barely limping on. I told myself I wouldn't bother. But I have to, because it is the final step of the writing process: sharing with others. This is a multi-chaptered fiction, based on the life and times of Green Day, though severely altered to fit into an alternative reality, as is revealed later in the story. And though a part of me feels strange, to be older now and writing such things, if it were not for this band, and this piece I have worked on for months and am still chipping away at, I never would have started my real novel. Using familiar characters and settings allowed me to practice development, both in story and structure, and gave me power and confidence to build not just sections of fiction, but chapters. This, I have said before, is my practice novel. And I'm sharing it because I'm a diehard Green Day fan and daydreamer, a silly little girl with lots to say, and even if one person appreciates it, then it will have been worth it.

The waves crashed on the beach in a steady rhythm, drawing and falling against the sand in a soothing pattern. It's a sound Mike is accustomed to, but he isn't used to hearing it as he's lying in bed at night. Although it is not unpleasant, it does keep him awake. For awhile, Mike simply laid there, hoping that if he kept his eyes closed long enough, sleep would eventually find him. When it didn't, he turned over on his side, facing the other occupant of the bed.

Billie Joe had his back to him, curled up around a pillow as he usually does in his sleep, so the hand Mike placed on the curve of his side was hesitant. He didn't want to wake him from a sound slumber. Fortunately, Billie's head turned toward Mike, his eyes glittering in the moonlight leaking in from their opened window.

“You awake?” Mike asked him in a soft voice, a bit raspy from lack of use.

“Obviously,” Billie smiled, and he sighed and rested his head back on the pillow when Mike wrapped around him and scooted closer. “You okay?”

“Can't sleep,” Mike answered with his own sigh, nuzzling his nose into his boyfriend's hair. It smelled like the ocean. Their fingers intertwined against Billie Joe's stomach, and Mike was comforted that, though they were miles from their home, they fit just the same. “I think I'm ready to go back to California.”

Humming in agreement, Billie said, “I know what you mean.”

Neither spoke for a moment, Billie concentrating on the slow throb of Mike's heart against his back, Mike listening to the Pacific waves yet again. He felt a little better than he did a few minutes prior, now that he'd said what had been on his mind. Cuddling, too, helped. “Don't get me wrong,” Mike murmured beside Billie Joe's ear. “Hawaii is probably one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, and this time with you. . . was perfect. But I'll be glad to get back in to a routine, you know?”

“Yeah. . . not to mention missing Liv like crazy, right?”

Mike nodded earnestly. “That too.”

“We'll be on our way tomorrow, Mike. The plane ride is going to kill you if you don't get some sleep, though.”

“Speak for yourself,” he retorted kindly, squeezing Billie once for emphasis. As he tangled his leg around one of his boyfriend's, Mike placed a soft kiss to the crook of Billie's shoulder. “What about you, Beej? What's keeping you up?”

“Lyrics,” Billie Joe sighed, extending his neck just a bit to allow Mike a little extra space for more kisses. “Right now it's like nine different songs going at once, so it's all static and I can't sort one thought from the next. Sometimes I wish I could just turn it off.”

“You wouldn't be you if you could,” Mike whispered, and the affectionate way he said it made Billie smile. The kisses were getting longer, wetter, as Mike's erection stiffened along the curve of his boyfriend's ass, and suddenly, the sound of the waves was gone. The only thing either man could hear were their hearts beating a pulse in their skulls. “Maybe you'll be able to make sense of it when we get home. Get back to basics.”

Billie whispered a moan when Mike nipped at his throat, a teasing scrape of his teeth. “Maybe,” he agreed, breathless, and then he turned in his Mike's arms, winding his own around the other's neck. Sapphire eyes sparkled in the moon, and Billie Joe smiled. “But for now, turn my mind off the way you only can, okay?”

The title is cliche as cliche gets, and I don't give a monkey's behind. That song is gorgeous.
