Chapter 1: Taeyeon
SooYoung killed the engine of her car before giving out a sigh, her hand grabbing her car key lightly. Giving a glance out of her car window, she swallowed loudly before tightening her hand and pulled out the key. Pushing the door open, she stepped out of her car and closed the door, locking the car silently.
With slow and careful steps, she walked towards her destination while preparing her speech over and over again in her head. When she finally reached, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes before muttering a soft prayer in her heart. Opening her eyes, she took a swift glance around the workplace before letting her gaze landed on a small pair of feet that under a car. She knew that it has to be her friend, for no one has a smaller pair of feet in this garage at all. Nodding her head at the few car mechanics that she had grown familiar with through the past year of visiting, she walked towards the small pair of feet before squatting down.
“Taeng.”
SooYoung called out before tapping on the tip of the black boots that belonged to Taeyeon’s.
“Tae!”
SooYoung called out louder again and watched as the small feet twitched before it drew out slowly, revealing blue long pants and then a small pair of gloved hands appeared at the bottom of the bumper before a face popped out.
“Soo?”
“Hey.”
SooYoung smiled lightly as she watched Taeyeon pushed herself up to a sitting position on the platform that she had been laying on to repair the underside of the car.
“What brings you here?”
Taeyeon asked as she pulled off her working gloves before pulling her towel that was tucked at her side pockets.
“How long have you been doing this car? You’re perspiring all over.”
Taeyeon gave SooYoung an amused look as she wiped off her sweat with the towel before tucking it back to her pocket.
“Well… I worked here, of course I will perspire. What are you talking about?”
Taeyeon let out a short chuckle before standing up and walked towards the office with SooYoung following behind.
“You still haven’t told me why you are here.”
Taeyeon said again as she opened the mini cooler and took a can of soda out for SooYoung before taking a bottle of mineral water for herself.
“I got you a roommate.”
SooYoung informed her nonchalantly while Taeyeon frowned at the newly received news.
“A roommate? Since when did I said I need a roommate?”
SooYoung shrugged lightly and watched as Taeyeon took a sit behind the office table that was filled up with papers of different colors and sizes.
“Well, actually… Fany is the one who got you a roommate.”
“And why?”
“Why? Er…”
SooYoung rubbed her nose nervously while she tried to think of ways to break this news to Taeyeon.
“We… we have a friend. And this friend… kind of meets with some difficulties and is in need of a place to stay temporarily… so…”
“So why my place?”
Taeyeon cut her off with a skeptical look.
“Because you are living alone right now and you - you had a spare room and it’s been empty for so long and… you could use some company with this roommate too right?”
SooYoung gave her a sheepish smile before gulping down her soda, ignoring the fizziness that burned her throat.
“I don’t need a company and I am fine with living alone.”
Taeyeon snapped when she realized what her friends are doing right now.
“I - I know but c’mon Tae, it’s been a year! It’s time to try to let it go… don’t you think so?”
“I don’t need you to tell me what to do!”
Taeyeon snapped angrily before standing up in rage.
“Okay okay! Fine, I know you hate this talk the most but this is not the main thing right now. The main thing is I’ve someone that needed a place to stay and Fany and I had thought it through clearly before deciding to be your place.”
“You should have talked to me first and asked for my opinion and permission before deciding on your own! It’s my apartment!”
Taeyeon snapped once again and SooYoung could see that she was still annoyed by the unwanted topic that was brought out just now.
“I could if I had the time, but it’s was a rush of time for us too. I’m sorry. Fany and I are sorry about it but you’re the only one that could help us. You know that Fany and I will be out of town soon, and there will be no one to take care of her.”
SooYoung explained as she placed the can of soda down on the small coffee table before leaning against the couch that she was sitting on.
“Her?”
Taeyeon asked once she caught on with the gender.
‘”Yeah, it’s a girl.”
“Who is she?”
“Interested?”
SooYoung eyes lit up with excitement when she heard the tone of her friend but only received a roll of eyes in return.
“I had to know who this person is if I am going to share my apartment right?”
“So you are fine with this?”
SooYoung asked with a wide smile before jumping to Taeyeon’s side excitedly. Taeyeon gave a sigh before leaning against the cabinet that was beside the office door.
“Name? Age? Occupation? Any medical condition? Reason for needing a room?”
Taeyeon muttered monotonously with a pair deadpanned eyes while SooYoung’s smile dropped at those questions.
No, not yet. She’s not prepared to answer all these questions at all. All she had planned was to tell Taeyeon that she got a roommate for her and then the rest would just be… the rest. The future! Now, how is she going to handle all these right now?
“So?”
Taeyeon egged on with an arched of her eyebrow as she watched her best friend’s shocked and worried face. Something is wrong, Taeyeon knew but she doesn’t know what is.
“Er…”
SooYoung scratched her eyebrow as she looked away from Taeyeon before giving an awkward smile.
“Why don’t you find out yourself later on? I mean, you know, in this way… you can get to know more of your roommate!”
SooYoung nodded her head to what she had just said, feeling proud that she was able to come out with such a good idea before fumbling for her phone.
“Let me just call Fany to tell her that you’ve agreed and you know- “
“Since when did I agreed!?”
Taeyeon straightened her body immediately and launched herself at SooYoung, trying to stop her from calling Tiffany.
“You just asked so much about your new roommate, which means you allow!”
“I asked because I’m protecting my well-being and trying to be aware who am I letting in. I did not agree yet!”
“Well, she’s our friend! Do you think we will send a murderer to you?”
SooYoung retorted back as she tried to shrug Taeyeon off her body and dialed Tiffany.
“Well, based on my knowledge on you and Tiffany, both of you would probably send someone that would throw herself on me since you guys have been wanting me to move on and get a life!”
SooYoung stopped swinging her body at Taeyeon’s words and looked at the older but smaller girl with wide eyes.
“Wow, so you do know that we are trying to help you?”
Taeyeon stopped at her attempt to snatch SooYoung’s phone and stepped back.
“Of course I know. I am not stupid. It’s… it’s just not easy to move on.”
Taeyeon whispered out softly before hanging her head down and stare at the carpeted floor, her fists clenched tightly at her side when she felt the scars on her heart starting to burn and bleed.
“Tae…”
SooYoung called out softly, feeling hurt to see the old wounds on her friend that were never recovered once opened.
Taeyeon looked up with a sad smile before shaking her head.
“I need to get back to work.”
“Tae,”
SooYoung grabbed on her friend’s wrist before giving her a warm smile.
“She’s not a bad person - my friend. She’s just going through a difficult time right now and in need of a place to stay. Fany and I just feel better that if she was to stay with you. We trust you Taeyeon. I’m sorry for not discussing this with you earlier but time was not on my side Tae, I hope you can understand this and help us out. She’s a nice person and you will get to like her. As a friend I mean.”
Taeyeon nodded her head before withdrawing her hand from SooYoung’s grip.
“Just let me know when she will come.”
SooYoung let out a big smile before nodding her head.
“I will, thank you Tae, we owe you a favor.”
Taeyeon merely gave a wave before leaving the office and went back to her unfinished car while SooYoung could only look at the solemn back view guiltily.
“I’m sorry Tae… we are just trying to help you.”
She whispered gently before dialing the number that she had memorized by heart to fill in the latest information.
-
“Jessi?”
“Hmm?”
Jessica looked up from the documents that she was sorting through on the guest bed of Tiffany’s and SooYoung’s house and smiled lightly at Tiffany.
“How are you holding up?”
Tiffany asked gently as she took a seat beside the older girl and hugged her.
“Well I guess?”
Jessica replied softly before letting herself sunk into the warm embrace that her friend is giving to her right now.
“Soo just called, she managed to get the place that I told you yesterday. The owner agreed to let you move in.”
“Really?”
Jessica lifted her head up and stared at Tiffany with her big round eyes.
“Yeah. You can move in by tomorrow.”
“That’s… great.”
Jessica muttered out softly. She was happy that she got a place to stay in such a short notice but at the same time, she couldn’t help but feeling sad, lost and helpless. After all, this wasn’t what she had in mind at first when she find out she was pregnant. When she was with Dan. When she decided to let herself to be love once again.
“Are you alright?”
Tiffany asked her gently and Jessica forced out a smile before nodding her head. Tiffany studied the older girl’s face for a few second before smiling a little.
“The owner is a good person, Jessi. She’s helpful and nice. I’m sure you’ll be fine under her care. She will be able to help you whenever you need if that’s what you are worrying about?”
Jessica let out a soft chuckle before nodding her head. How could she underestimate her best friend ability to read her inside out like a well memorized poem?
“Don’t worry so much Jess. Things will straighten out on its own when the time has come. C’mon, let’s get our lunch!”
Tiffany squeezed Jessica’s shoulder lightly before smiling brightly at the older girl. Jessica returned her the smile and allowed herself to be pulled up by the younger girl.
“I got us pizza!!”
Jessica shook her head at the younger’s girl hyper-ness due to her food choice and was glad that SooYoung was a good sport at eating. The younger girl eats almost everything. Unlike Dan, they do have to compromise on a lot of thing solely on the food topic. Her smile drop when she realized that no matter how disappointed and angry she is with Dan, she was still unable to get the jerk out of her mind.
Sitting down at the dining table, she watched as Tiffany busied around the kitchen, taking plates and cups before settling opposite of her and pulled the slices of pizza before placing one on each of their plates. Giving Jessica a smile, Tiffany squealed a little before taking a huge bite out of her pizza.
Jessica couldn’t help but think of how she looked exactly like her during the times when Dan reluctantly agreed to have pizza for meals with her. And that was happiness to her. Because having Dan allowing and accompanying to do things with her was a big accomplishment for her. And even if it was as simple as that, she was happy.
Letting out a sigh, Jessica stared at her own piece of pizza before muttering out softly.
“Tiff? What’s wrong with me? Why does it seem like I could never ever have happiness? Not with Dan and not even with… her?”
Tiffany slowed down her chewing when she heard the fragile whisper and couldn’t help but let her heart ache for her best friend. Swallowing down the morsel of food, Tiffany reached across the table and held onto Jessica’s hand softly.
“Whatever is mean to be, will meant to be.”
She whispered gently and watched as a droplet of tear knocked silently against the wooden table that they are situated at, creating a darker hue. Tiffany closed her eyes briefly and prayed.
She prayed.
That this set of tears meant as a new start of life for Jessica tomorrow.
She prayed.
Hardly.
-
She stood at the roadside, a big luggage at her side while her hand held onto a small piece of paper. She took a good look at the scribbling on the paper before tilting her head up and checked for the address but found none. Frowning, she looked around the place and back to the small piece of paper again. Pouting, she took a step back and tried to search for the small plate of address once again.
“Why can’t I find it?”
Stupid SooYoung and her stupid appetite and her stupid stomach! If she didn’t eat half of the pizza yesterday followed by a can of beer and two cans of soda, she wouldn’t get a stomach ache that made her ran to the toilet for the whole night. And if she didn’t have a bad stomachache, she would be the one that is sending her to her new rented apartment with Tiffany together and she wouldn’t be lost now.
“Stupid SooYoung.”
Jessica cursed lightly before deciding to approach the only operating business that was on her right. Pulling her luggage behind her, Jessica went to the shop and looked around carefully to search for a being that was currently not working on any cars. Jessica stood there quietly and waited for a while and to her relief, a guy with blond short hair straightened his body under the hood of a white car he was working on and they managed to have an eye contact. Raising one of his eyebrows, he walked towards Jessica slowly and stood with a distance apart of them, aware of his current state right now.
“Hi, may I help you Miss?”
Jessica gave one small smile to the guy and stretched her hands out towards the blonde hair guy.
“Could you tell me where this place is? I can’t seem to find it.”
The blonde guy took over the paper slowly before reading the scribbling on it. A few seconds later, he raised his head up with a pair of raised eyebrows.
“You’re the new tenant?”
Taken aback by the sudden question, Jessica blinked for a few times before nodding her head slowly. The blonde guy grinned and held up a hand before turning back to the car garage.
“BOSS! NOONA! BOSS!!! Your new tenant is here and she’s hot!”
Jessica blushed furiously at the last sentence and looked back down on the smooth cement ground.
“Do - do you want to take a seat first? Boss is at the back repairing a car and probably will take some time before coming out. Come, come! Take a seat here first. I’ll - go and find her.”
The blonde guy waved her in to the garage and guided her to a plastic chair that was situated at the side of the garage, which Jessica assumed was for customers to sit while waiting for their cars to be check on.
“I’m Ji Hyun. Do you need any drinks?”
Jessica looked back to Ji Hyun and gave a small smile accompanied by a small shake of head.
“I’m fine. Thank you.”
“Okay, I’ll get Boss for you!”
Ji Hyun flashed a child like smile to her before running towards the back of the garage and Jessica took the time to observe the garage. It was just like any other car garage, filled with cars and service crews that wore the same outfits but in different styles. Some had the overall up to their hips only, choosing to tie the long sleeves around to secure it and leave the upper torso naked or covered with singlet. Some had it fully wear with the sleeves rolled up while some had it unbuttoned halfway. There were not much service crews at the moment. It was only five including Ji Hyun and all were busying with the cars they had at hand. There were only a few moments where two of them had their heads up and gave Jessica a smile when they noticed her. Jessica continued to look around, noticing a table at the far end of the garage where no cars were occupying and around it are some cloth lounge chairs that looked similar to the pool lounge chairs. There are also a few standing fans around the garage which Jessica assumed is to lower the heat during spring and summer. Turning back, Jessica found herself looking through a large panel of glass window and through it she could see a working desk that is cluttered with lots of colorful papers and stationery. Behind the paper is a black working chair and there are a row of wooden cabinets arranged neatly against the wall. Glancing forward, there is a simple couch a few meters away from the door and it was completed with a glass coffee table. At the corner, there is a small fridge.
An office. Jessica mused and nodded her head slightly at how a car garage could look so organized and office like. She then heard a few shuffling of feet behind her.
“Hi, are you the new roommate that SooYoung introduced?”
The voice was smooth, rich and all too familiar to Jessica that it made her froze in place.
No. It couldn’t be…
“Erm, Miss?”
The voice called out again and Jessica felt a lump in her throat. The voice - she couldn’t be mistaken.
“Miss?”
Jessica felt her heartbeat quickened and she took a deep breath before turning around slowly. Her eyes widened when the familiar face comes into her sight.
“S - SooYeon?”
Jessica couldn’t believe her ears. Standing right in front of her was… was someone that she never thought she would see again.
“Is that you? SooYeon?”
Jessica let her eyes glanced through the baby like face that she had chose to bury deep within her heart for the past three years before letting out the breath that she had hold on unknowingly.
“Taeyeon…”
