This morning I opened my e-mail account to some appalling news. Brendan had got in touch with me to tell me that last Saturday my friend Matt had died. i don't understand why people still find it acceptable to drive while impaired. it's such a horrific example of human selfishness. why does it seem to take the death of a friend or family member for some people to clue in? i'd like to think i'd still be as adamant about this even if i hadn't lost a cousin and watched my dad's side of the family be torn apart.

i'm very sorry for your loss. this sort of thing should never happen.

having arsed aroung with livejournal's logon requirements i wish i'd just sent you an email. i guess there's a need to make grief public anyhow ...
i was touched by your affectionate account of Matt and glad you got to meet him in Australia. it made me wish i'd seen more [anything!] of him since he returned in '98. it was good also to hear some recent stories and to find that, rather than 'not having changed at all', Matt seems to have intensified and evolved all those qualities that made him such an engaging and loveable human being.
no date for the London wake yet but it seems like you'll be back for it.

Thank you, Mark. I was commenting to Joe in an e-mail the other day that in many respects, I envy the other members of Bedlam Opera for having the chance to be in a band with Matt. I don't think I can really add much more than that.

As for getting a livejournal log-on, it's not a total waste of time. Keep a hold of it. You don't have to keep a journal, but I can make sure (through your ID and password) that you can log on here and read all of my bletherings - I'm presently locking some of my entries so that the whole wide interweb doesn't get to know about certain aspects of my personal life in tedious detail. Just log in and come here as usual (or 'add' me to your friends list and then follow the link to your friends page).

I'll be getting a flight back on the evening of the 25th, so I'm sure we'll catch up soon, hopefully Matt's wake will take place after I land.
