Aidan slammed into the door as hard as he could, hearing it splinter against his shoulder. For the first time since coming to the island, he desperately missed being a vampire. If he had been a vampire, he would have been here in an instant and the door would have been toothpicks. He reared back and gave it a kick, this time the door snapping open under the force.
In just a few fast steps he was across the small living area and heading toward Martha. Three of the things were swarming her and in the dim light he could already see that she was bleeding.
"Martha!"
Leaping forward, he grabbed the one nearest her and plunged his knife into its back. The thing scratched and thrashed at him, clawing into his arm but he barely noticed the pain as he ripped the knife through it, spilling open what passed for its guts.
It's an involuntary response, out on a sigh, and she doesn't have time to register how grateful she is that it's him because she's just so glad to see someone. She hefts Alfie higher and presses her back against the wall.
"I think all of them on the island," Aidan said, positioning himself between Martha and the creatures that seemed to be intent on attacking her and Alfie.
"How many did you have in here?"
He could see two others, maybe more, through the dim light. He had his gun as well, but he didn't want to use that except as a last resort.
