The line was around the block, apparently, which I don't believe was typical for theaters in that decade.

Only for the really huge blockbuster movies. Jaws reportedly caused that. All three Star Wars films, the first two Indiana Jones, the first three Star Treks, E.T.... beyond that I don't remember. Except for Jaws, those were all movies I saw.

Also, back then, theaters were big enough for a line that stretched that long to all fit in that theater. With the reduction of theaters to shoeboxes, there's no call for that kind of line anymore...
