Well, Halloween, when the souls of the deceased roam the earth, is only on one night a year. So sadly, this one night was all they got. But it was enough to let Ennis know.

Yep, it's the Halloween aspect in the story, only one night each year. But like I already said: Ennis knew Jack was still with him.
