Author's Notes: This is based on a piece by
cookie_pixie, in which students went along into Knockturn Alley to buy something as a right of passage. After one student is killed by their purchase, the tradition only becomes more popular.
Through the grimy glass, he saw a boy shuffling nervously on the opposite sidewalk. Borgin scowled, discouraging the loathsome creature. Typically, the monsters arrived the week before term, sneaking away while their parents shopped to prove their bravery. Yet this one was two weeks early.
He'd expected none this year. He'd solved the problem, he thought, with the sale of hangman's rope, to scare the pretenders while advertising to the ones with money and breeding.
Yet, paradoxically, it was beginning early.
The bell announced the boy's entrance. Outside, Borgin glimpsed another - a girl this time.
What had he done?
