Whoa. Well, I said if there were enough people still watching this journal to surprise me, I'd keep writing in it. And by "surprise me", I meant somewhere in the ballpark of like... 40 people. Needless to say, when I saw 150 responses in just a few hours, my nuts jumped out of my pants, screamed and fainted

I don't think any of us were aware your nuts were so surprise-prone. Is there some science we can apply to this? Perhaps we could use your nuts as a standard unit for surprise. "That gunshot in the dark room was 1.8 gryphon nuts!" Or perhaps, "I'd like to throw grampa a surprise party. He's old, though, and his heart is a bit weak, so it can't be more than .6 gryphon nuts, or he might have an attack."

Question, would 2 be the base value in this, or would all things have to be expressed such that 1 gryphon nut = 1/2 as surprised as 2 just was?

Well, we have a benchmark so far, where 150 responses at 2 hours on livejournal is 2 gryphon nuts. This is science, though, so that'll need to be repeated to be an accepted value.

Remember, though, this isn't a maximum value. You can always assume theoretical gryphan nuts, so if something is more surprising you could always have 3 or 4 or more gryphon nuts and assume the extra are hypothetical.
