Summary: Chris and Zach finally figure some things out when they kiss under the mistletoe.
It was late. Not too late, but late enough that Chris was kind of starting to have longing thoughts of a warm bed (and maybe of Zach in that bed to cuddle up to). He sighed, looking over at him. "Think we should think about getting out of here? Or they might clean us up in the morning," he laughed a bit, a couple of beers too many making him mellow.
"Not a half bad idea, rest is always a good thing. And the beer only made me sleepy really. Being at this party was meant to be a blast but I think I'm too tired from working on everything. Not caught up on sleep yet." He smiled. "I sound 80 years old I know, but I feel it."
"You don't look it," Chris shot back, smiling. "God, I know... and you have a lot more to work on than I do." He bit his lip. "My place is closer, want to crash there?" he offered. It would be easier, he thought. He couldn't have Zach drive an extra couple of miles when he had a perfectly good couch.
"Okay, yah. The drive home is a killer. Especially when I feel like I'm about to doze off right here. Thanks man." He smiled. "Lets say our goodbyes."
"Are you okay to drive or should I call a cab?" Chris asked as they walked toward the host, who looked even more tired than they did. "I had too much to drive," he added.
"I could be alright but not with the sleepiness. So its either walking or a cab." He said and sighed. "Up to you."
"I'll call now, because otherwise we might as well walk," Chris said. He made the call, moving off into an alcove. He didn't look up and hadn't noticed that the top of the alcove was decorated too. Call made, he started to move out.
"Hey, Chris, you're under the mistletoe!" A girl by the wall grinned. "I've been waiting all night for a chance to get you there." She took a few wobbly steps toward him and Zach dashed forward, throwing an arm around Chris, putting himself between them. He knew it was the same girl Chris had been dodging all evening, sweet and harmless, but unwittingly working toward the stalker of the year award.
"I think he's just fine." Zach smiled, giving her shoulder a light pat.
Chris's eyes widened. He was grateful to Zach for saving him, the girl was sweet but just a little too intense. But he could only think of one solution if the girl didn't kiss him. He coughed, and nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine," he said, dazed. Hopefully she'd take it for a little too much to drink. Or anything other than what it was. "Zach?" quietly, nervously.
Zach gave his shoulder a light squeeze. "C'mon...lets go wait outside. The cabbies like to leave if you make them wait."
"Good point," Chris nodded, dazedly, grateful that Zach had got him out of that. They said their goodbyes to the host, and Chris added a, "Hope you get to sleep soon," and they were outside. "God, it's cold," Chris said as he pulled his coat a little tighter around him. "Thanks, man, for getting me out of that... she might be less difficult when alcohol's not involved, but..."
"I saw you panic, I couldn't help but save you." He smiled. "And I figured it might get me a kiss at the worst." He laid an arm around the other mans shoulder and huddled them together. "This isn't cold, cold is where I grew up, this is a spring day there."
"Well, you missed out on that," Chris said. "And that would've been going above and beyond, kissing her for me. Not that I wouldn't have appreciated it." He laughed. "God, don't know if I could stand that, then..." he was really cold though Zach's arm was helping.
Zach leaned in and cupped his cheek. "Wasn't talking about her you dummy." He grazed their lips together gently before pushing them together for a full kiss, pulling away a second later. "Now we're even. I saved you and got what I was aiming for."
"You wanted to kiss me?" Chris asked, even more dazed than he'd been earlier, and he wasn't sure if he liked it or not that Zach was actually a better kisser than he'd imagined. He liked it, but knowing that would hurt in a new way. "And... thank you for saving me. Even if it does make me sound like a damsel in distress."
"I don't mind. I love helping my friends. Can't help but be curious at what it feels like to kiss you." He shrugged.
"I've been curious about it myself," Chris said, trying not to sound sad that that was all Zach wanted. "To know what you kissed like. Better than I thought, too," he might as well tell Zach that much.
"You had low expectations then, I'm not that good." He laughed. "At least not compared to some people I've kissed."
"You're amazing," Chris said, unable to let Zach say that. "Best kiss I've ever had," he said. "Could be because I wanted it so much." He couldn't express his relief that that was when the cab pulled up. He climbed in and gave his address, trying not to look at Zach to see his reaction.
Zach slid in next to him and smiled softly. "Thanks for saying that." He murmured quietly. "For someone from Cali that makes you sound so virginal."
"Technically I am, at least with guys," Chris answered. "Don't count the work ones and until you there wasn't a guy who got me interested in kissing him. Always thought that it was possible, but wanted a guy who I wanted like the girls I've kissed." He knew the alcohol was loosening his tongue and thoughts. That was why he usually didn't drink much around Zach.
"You feel that way about me? Honestly?" Zach asked softly, slightly surprised.
Swallowing, Chris nodded. He really hadn't planned to say it like this. He actually hadn't really planned to say it at all, but this was not how he would have thought of it. "Have for a while."
Zach smiled a bit more at that. "You do know how to make a boy feel special Christopher." He took the other man's hand in his own and squeezed lightly.
"You are," Chris murmured. "Zachary. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's not... entirely unwelcome? And before you laugh at me, remember that this is a first."
"No, its not unwelcome." He smiled. "I actually welcome it a lot."
"I'm glad I got caught under the mistletoe," Chris murmured and leaned in, tentatively, kissing Zach gently. "I could get used to this," he said against Zach's lips.
"Yah...me too, honestly its crazy that you feel the same, I just assumed you wouldn't be interested in me." He smiled, cupping Chris' cheek lightly.
"Not crazy," Chris shook his head. "Just waiting for the guy who'd make me feel the way you do." His next words were hesitant. "I want... if you want... you to sleep in my bed tonight."
"You sure? I mean, we don't have to DO anything, but I just want to make sure we're on the same page." He grazed their lips together again and sighed.
"The invitation - for now - is only for sleeping. Okay, and maybe holding," Chris grinned. "But no... not offering more. I don't know what I'm ready for yet, but I know that's what I want. As long as you can stand it, too."
"I can stand it, and I can be patient. No pressure." Zach slipped an arm around the other man and tugged him close gently.
"Thank you," Chris rested his head on Zach's shoulder. This was right. He knew it.
"You're welcome." Zach smiled as they pulled up to Chris' house. "Come on, let's get in the house, where its warm."
Chris nodded, paying the driver and leading Zach into his house, where it was warm. He liked the beginning of this... very much.
