AN OPEN LETTER TO GATORGRRRL

[In all the years that I've been on LJ and now on DW, I've never posted about things going on in other journals. I've never even left comments to original posts. But since comments are frozen on the original post, and I feel I cannot let this one pass without comment, I'm making a post here. So here goes.]

Yesterday reading the quotes someone posted from that fic just kinda had my jaw hanging. I felt like I was reading some kind of...thing, some kind of crazy colonialist bullshit from the past. Or some sort of sick joke. (I WISH I was more shocked that people still think that way--and that they think writing something like that fic and posting it is a grand idea. And she seems to only realize/be apologizing for the "too soon" issue...? *headdesk*)

I could pretty much quote every line of this post and say YES to the lot--so in short, I say this post is really damn good.

I always get palpitations on topics of racism because I panic that I've been guilty of similar offenses--possibly in the case of overcompensation--but really, there are mistakes in knowledge and experience and judgement, and then there's this terrifying fic you've written about ( ... )

i didn't read the fic and only started poking around when i saw your post last night and read her apology. there are so many levels of fail in this whole fiasco - she didn't think setting a fanfic in a real life disaster was tasteless; her friends and beta and artist didn't think so either; her portrayal of characters OMFG ... the saddest part, judging from the way she worded her apology, is that she has no idea why she's getting so much hate. i don't think she realises any of the things she did wrong.

No, she's holding out on behalf of herself and her supporters. She's only "caving in" because of all the tremendous pressure. But, really, how can someone who wrote something so wholly racist possibly turn around and see what she did? Her thinking exists in a whole other place.

It's often been said that white writers should never attempt to write for people of color because they don't "get it" and can't portray the unique experiences of people they can never possibly understand.

I've heard that argument, and thought it was wrong, but as a white girl with a fair bit of fandom-related paranoia was absolutely terrified to argue against the point. I will do better when I encounter it in the future.

Hey -- just wanted to say I think this is a fantastic post. I'm going to go ahead and add it to my list of links, but if you'd rather I take the link down just let me know. My roundup post is here, and it's also mirrored on LJ.
