I just woke up and only coherent enough to answer the first question: Shep was on duty in the Control Room that day. As the girls' departure took place during his shift, he knew when it would be. As for his comments and stuff, those on-duty usually have a few last words with the out-going team (be careful, report back schedule, etc.), so he was simply following that format. Plus, I think he was just trying to rib Jenn a little, since it was her first time going to the settlement. And we all know he teases Teyla mercilessly about her love life; he did accuse her of having a crush on one of the new Marines, after all (which garnered him a punch in the leg) :)
Of course, my Shep/Teyla brain colours it into a veiled "I wish I was going so I could be your hot date"/"Me too..." thing :)

I like the way your brain works*G*
All you say is true, but that look he gives as they after they go though the gate is like,"I really hope there's *no* hot date". You know joking but maybe digging at the same time.
I have to say, this is one episode that continues to frustrate me. I even rewrote it once because I couldn't stand it. I thought Teyla was very out of character in this episode, and I had time with it as the lead into Teyla's pregnancy. I think it would have been easier if the "hot date" was mentioned earlier, since then the Athosian boyfriend wouldn't have been such a surprise. I think I would rather have seen a potentially dark Teyla storyline as she looked for her people than the baby plotline.
I'm not sure how Jen could have thought Teyla was involved with Rodney. *shakes head*
I'm still of the belief that the baby idea could have been introduced in a different way that would have been better and more believable in the long run. I had more than a few ideas myself. :)

You and I think most of the crew on the JT thread at GW.
To your second point: I'd always taken it that the weapons the bad-guys had weren't ones Teyla was fully familiar with. I mean, sure she could use them when they came to hand (because she's awesome!), but bantos rods are the weapons she uses most and is therefore best with. Isn't that the weapon-type she created and used? (It's been a while since I've seen it. *g*)
Yes, she used the stick like a bantos rod but she was also using her knife as well. I just thought it would have made sense to make use of what was available to her.
Then again, she was trying to travel fast and light so that could have been part of her reasoning.
I can't watch that episode more than once for your reasons beautifully stated here and then some.
I personally think that Sheppard wanted to go with her. ;) And yes, it was so obvious he wanted to know more...a little too late, in this case.
Now, I missed the whole Rodney piece....where was that? Must share. LOL
And I started to dislike Jen in this episode. So, true...why was she nominated is beyond me. It was supposed to be a Teyla episode and it so wasn't because of her.
Yup, that was the angle the writers supposedly wanted to go and that would have been very interesting. Who knows. I can't and won't complain either because although I do wish the writers had gone in another direction with Rachels' pregnancy, like make it John's baby, I still think that we got some of the best JT moments when Teyla was pregnant. We got an overlysuperprotective John and a very jealous one, too.
Second:I love that Shep was on the balcony. Maybe it is my shippy eyes. But Shep had the look of a guy that was interested. Gosh, I though a couple of times you could describe his look, as "longing". Shep may have been on duty, but that exchange between him and Teyla was personal. He was fishing and admiring.
So,so,so agree. He looked he was hanging out trying to shyly get some answers work or not.

This was when they were in the tent and Jenn asks if her hot date had been with one uptight astrophysics. Then Teyla tells her about Kannan.
And I agree we did get to see, overprotective, jealous and sensitive John too *G*

As for the rest, gotta go with you on that too.

And don't you think Teyla was being a little coyish there and kind of blushing too?
My shippy eyes found that whole balcony and gateroom scene with JT kind flirtatious.
I think for me that is the last playful moment between them that didn't have an underlying tension.
