I currently have a lone guinea pig but that's because every time I tried to get her a BFF from the humane society she'd attack them. She's also 8 years old and is probably going to live forever. As an animal behaviorist, I feel that as long as she gets enough human attention, she's fine. If anything, adding another pig just stressed her out because she'd be in fight club mode all the time.
What about a house bunny? We had them when I was growing up and they just require a moderate cage, litter boxes and rabbit proofing (moving all cables off the floor, child safety latches on cabinets).

I also kept hermit crabs in college and enjoyed them. I had giant strawberries and a few little guys in a community.

I'd love to have a bunny. I used to have guinea pigs as well. I'm trying to stick with something caged because they won't charge a pet fee if it lives in a cage.

Guinea pigs!! I remember my guinea pig. She smelled clean all the time. The only time when it smelled horrendous is when I didn't clean the cage. And I agree with the cages being bulky and tacky. It always took up so much damn room and made the room look cluttered no matter where I put it.

I only had one guinea pig as well and she was fine with just me alone. In fact, when I tried giving her another girl guinea pig to socialize with, she spent most of her time fighting. I guess it just depends on the guinea pig.

Have you thought about a bird? I've always wanted a parakeet... My friend used to have finches though and she's like "Damn I hate them!" xD, so I'm assuming they aren't the human-interacting kind of birds...

A bird is a big commitment, and I don't think I'd have time for it. I might wait a bit and see if the local rescues can do anything for me. People have accidental hamsters all the time.

Yeah that's why they stopped carrying them. You know, instead of stepping up the animal care and preventing illness.
