Only in dreams

Jan 31, 2006 11:00

It's been a while since I've had a "bad dream", or at least it's been a long time since I've remembered having a bad dream. But this morning I had one in which I was in an elevator with three girls, but dreams make things vague and therefore it's hard to say for sure who these people were. One had dark hair and glasses, the other was tall and had ( Read more... )

Personally, I don't think of dreams as having a universal dictionary between people. That's the problem I have with Kyle's former psych prof's explanation. I've had things I've wanted to let go and things I already let go. Why didn't I have a falling in a elevator dream to help me understand that process? What sort of dreams to people who've never seen an elevator or never experienced weightlessness have when they want to/have let go of something? I don't believe we have the capacity to dream things beyond what we understand already. To me, our minds are just too broad and full of so many ideas that we've had in the past or been exposed to without even realizing it, for there to be interpretations outside of ourselves (which is why I can't buy the idea of dreams as being prophetic, I think those are just coincidences really ( ... )

but i'm the chosen one; i can have prophetic visions.

but really, i see where your coming from as well. it's hard to imagine that dreams mean anything beyond what they are. i believe that most dreams do come from things you think about during the day or for long periods of time. the mystery lies in the symbolism. we have vast amounts of unconscious ideas and desires, but why do we see them in ways different from everyday experiences? i think it's because we can. the urge for self-transcendence is something everyone needs to experience, and most do so with the aide of drugs or most commonly alcohol. like you said, dreaming is just another way to experience this other reality. so enjoy this altered state of consciousness and make no attempt to figure out the "truth" behind these dreams. you won't find one.

Yeah, it's pretty difficult to apply a single meaning to one idea relating to dreams. It's also important to note that dreams, while they are thought to have themes and symbolism, can also be random explosions of neuro-goodness. That is, the subsconscious is processing whatever your conscious mind hasn't during the day. (Many think ( ... )
