Danny's on the phone when Max walks in. He waves Max toward the dining room, giving him a winning grin that hopefully doesn't betray the fact he's stressed beyond belief trying to plan this party.
Max sighs and shakes his head. He knows Danny is going crazy trying to make the first reunion between the team and the past two seasons' trades perfect and that it's taking every ounce of his sanity and energy to do so. He drapes his coat over a chair and sits down, taking a drink from the goblet of water set by his place setting. Hearing Danny hang up the phone in the other room, he chuckles as he hears him sigh in relief. Seconds later, his captain joins him in the dining room, plopping into a chair and draining his own goblet.
"This planning shit's gonna drive me to drink," he says to Max with a self-deprecating smile.
Max grins back. "You should have let someone else do it."
Danny tilts his head as if to concede the point but gives Max a glance that says he'd never do that. "You know how I am with stuff concerning the team, Maxim." And that is all that needs to be said.
They sit in silence for a while, Max taking a drink every few minutes, before the peace is broken by a loud shout of, "Honey, I'm here!" Max rolls his eyes but grins. Jason Pominville certainly knows how to make an entrance. He greets Jay with a nod when the forward makes his way into the dining room, pulling Danny up out of his chair to hug him. Jay nods back and takes a seat next to Danny.
He claps his captain on the back and asks, "So, what's up, Brie? When's everyone showin' up?" He downs half of his water and gives Danny a smirk. Danny shrugs.
"I dunno, but I hope it's soon.."
The next to arrive is Ryan. Max can see Danny smile in relief as he hears the familiar voice call, "Baby?"
Danny's up and out of the dining room before anyone even realizes and they hear Ryan's surprised laugh as Danny throws himself into his arms. "Hu-oh! Hey, love." Max smiles to himself. It's obvious they really love each other, and nowadays that's kind of hard to find.
Hand in hand, they both come into the dining room and sit down, Ryan taking the other side of Danny at the table. The stressed out captain lays his head on Ryan's shoulder and the goaltender murmurs soothingly to him, giving Max and Jay a tense wave. "It's all gonna go off without a hitch," he whispers to Danny, rubbing his lover's shoulders to sooth away some of the strain. Danny's almost asleep on his shoulder, nodding into his shirt at Ryan's reassuring words.
The next four arrive in a pack. Soupy, Derek, Kali, and Tommy all make their way through the door as a loud, chattering mass of men, laughing and joking even as they walk through the doorway. "What's up, Brie?" come a chorus of differently accented voices, prompting Danny to look up and give them all a tight smile. The four of them wave at the other guests and take their seats. Max tries not to smile as he notices Tommy sit as close to him as possible. He's had a crush on his linemate for two years now and it's only getting worse with every moment he spends with the delectable Austrian.
Derek takes a chair on his other side and he remembers as he feels both of their eyes on him the wild night they'd had in their hotel room after losing to the Maple Leafs and drinking themselves into oblivion. He coughs and flushes as he remembers the feeling of his two linemates touching him, his lips wrapped around the redhead's cock, the blonde sheathed deep inside of him. It was a night he wouldn't soon forget.
Soupy turns to talk to him, thankfully saving him from embarrassing himself with a 'problem' down below. "Who's all coming, Max?"
Max shrugs."Everybody 'cept the rookies, I think." He breathes a sigh of relief as his eyes scan the dining room. With four tables, it's big enough, at least.
It's only an hour later when all of the current Sabres have arrived, with the exception of Paul, Dainius, and Ty. Now they're waiting for the guests of honor, Jiri, Tay, and Marty, to show up. They break into groups at their respective tables, mostly linemates talking with each other and lovers giving each other heated glances.
Marty's the first, being the closest. He knocks at the door and Danny answers it. The captain flushes as his former player pulls him into a crushing hug, knocking the wind out of him. His ex and the player he misses most is back for tonight, and it's possibly the best thing ever to happen to him. He directs Martin into the room and is pleasantly surprised as the man takes a seat exactly across from him. Martin gives him a warm smile which he returns automatically.
Ryan watches all of this warily, but he remembers that his ex is also going to be there tonight and they have promised each other they won't get jealous. He leans to kiss Danny's temple, unable to suppress a small bit of satisfaction when he notices Martin's eyes widen. The Flyer's head turns toward him, his eyes asking the question which Ryan answers with a nod, biting his lip to stop a grin.
Jiri's the next and he sits quietly, waving at his old team with a happy smile. He's immediately engaged in conversation by Toni, who has always had just a small crush on him. He answers all of Toni's questions completely, noticing that the defenseman's eyes linger just a little too long on his lips when he speaks. His eyes take on a light as he leans back in his chair...this promises to be fun.
Taylor is the last to arrive. Danny tamps down hard a flash of possessiveness when he sees Ryan immediately stand to pull the Canuck into a tender embrace. Only the small, apologetic smile his lover gives him as he sits back down keeps him from pummeling Pyatt's face into a pulp. He leans to press a gentle kiss to Ryan's neck and nods, laughing inwardly, at Taylor's gaping mouth and dinner-plate sized eyes. But, looking around and realizing that all of his guests are in the room, he stands to go into the kitchen.
"La salade et le poulet maintenant, s'il vous plait," he speaks to the chef he's hired for the occasion. He turns to leave the kitchen when he hears a panicked voice speak in fast French.
His well-tuned French ear translates, "No, sir, we didn't order the chicken, we ordered the crab! The crab was the only thing they had at the time and we don't have chicken!" The chef swears and Danny closes his eyes against a bad situation. After a few minutes to calm himself, he turns around and shouts at the chef in quick, annoyed French, "Serve the salad and then we'll go to a burger place or something!" Turning to face the young man who'd screwed up the order, he sneers," As for you, delivery boy, you are fired! Chicken and crab are completely different types of meat! How could you do something so stupid! Pierre will give you your week's pay and then you leave!" He slumps against the wall, his anger draining his energy right out of him.
Ryan hears his lover screaming in his native tongue and winces. Whatever has happened, it has Danny worked up something fierce. Excusing himself, he walks quickly into the kitchen and asks in the little bit of French he knows, "Quel a occurit?"
He sighs to himself as Danny turns around and falls into his arms, slumping against his shoulder with an exasperated groan. The chef starts to speak in a long jumble of French, wringing his hands with a fearful glance at Danny. Ryan can't understand much, but he catches the phrases "failed you my son" and "crab instead of chicken" and comprehends the situation immediately. He moves with Danny in his embrace toward the chef and pats the distressed older man on the shoulder, muttering in French, "You're fine, sir...serve the salad."
The man turns to him and clasps his hand with both of his, murmuring praise and thanks that make Ryan blush and pull away. Drawing himself up, he grabs two platters filled with bowls of salad and hands them to a waitress who thankfully speaks English. The woman gives him a grateful smile and thanks him profusely for calming her Papa. He nods and pulls Danny out of the kitchen back to the table. Danny is calm but curiously silent and Ryan suspects he's exhausted from the weeks of planning this party. He gives his lover a soft kiss and sets him down in his chair, standing to address the room.
"It's alright, everyone. Just a little mixup with the kitchen. Danny's decided to treat us all to burgers after this delicious salad in penance for the inconvenience." Danny gives him a weary smile as he sits again and he rubs his thumb across his lover's hand that he was holding, scolding him gently for killing himself like this. "I don't want you to do this next time, love. Let someone else stress and freak about all of this crap."
Thankfully, the room is peacefully silent while their teammates eat the salads, giving Danny a chance to recharge and relax. When they're finally ready to leave for the burger joint, he directs everyone to their cars and pulls Ryan into his, kissing him passionately with gratitude. "Thank you, babe," he mutters with a smile and Ryan nods.
"No problem, Danny. Just promise me you won't do this to yourself again."
The captain turns the key and shuts the door, nodding sheepishly. "I should have realized I couldn't do everything myself."
