I've decided this story doesn't totally suck, so it will be continued, though only this chapter's written already, so it might be a lil while. It won't be abandoned though, don't worry.
1 Apparently, Danny felt the same, because Ryan didn't hear from him for the next two weeks, except slight glances during practices.
He was determined to catch his eye, but it seemed Danny had a similar conviction to avoiding said eye, making sure not to touch him or speak to him directly, but convey his orders through other players. He seemed to be getting close to Jason Pominville, using him as the messenger almost every time, even when Ryan had a question specifically for the captain.
He hadn't answered Ryan's calls or written back to Ryan's many notes stuffed in his duffel in a long time, but still Ryan held hope of a reconciliation between the two of them. Surely they could move on past this crush, couldn't they?
He'd thought so...but he could see himself being replaced by Jay, Danny's eyes starting to stop fixing on Ryan when he walked in the room and fix on Jason, the captain walking straight by him to embrace Jason whenever they saw each other.
At the end of the fifth week of being ignored, Ryan had had enough. He couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, was being devoured by guilt and regret day and night over the friendship he'd ruined. Determined to try to fix things, he stood in the locker room until it was only Danny and him left. Before the captain could make it to the door, Ryan had tackled him to the ground., arms wrapped around his thighs. Danny went down, hard, with a gasp, turning to glare at his attacker.
His eyes widened at the sight of a panting, desperate Ryan staring fiercely back at him. "Let go, Ryan," he growled.
Ryan didn't budge, just moved his hold up to Danny's midsection, holding him around the waist and pressing them nose to nose. "Not until you talk to me."
Danny's big hands pushed him away, his eyes narrowing. "I won't talk to you...there is absolutely nothing to say."
Ryan held on, despite a pain in his chest, both physical and emotional. "You can't just stop talking to me, period, without an explanation. That's not you, Danny, and you know it."
Danny looked away, balling his fists and closing his eyes as though to shield himself from Ryan's pleading gaze."I...I can't...just leave me alone." With a great burst of strength, he threw Ryan away from him and stood to run.
Ryan was up almost immediately after him, grasping his bicep to stop his flight, unprepared for when Danny turned and laid a solid punch to his jaw, the shock almost making him let go, but not quite, his grip tightening just a bit as he dodged another blow, then one more, until Danny had caught him in the chest, the shoulder, and the jaw again, eyes dancing with fire as he attempted to beat his pursuer until he was released. Ryan waited it out, not once raising a fist to retaliate, until after minutes of long, energy-consuming attempted blows, Danny slumped against him, pulling him tight to his chest and sobbing into his bruised shoulder.
As though he'd just realized who he was crying all over, Danny threw himself back from Ryan, fearfully staring back at him as the man tried to grab him again. "I don't want to talk to you....and I'm not going to."
Ryan leapt and just managed to grab his jersey as he turned to flee again. "I won't leave you alone until you tell me why we're not friends anymore."
Danny was cracking, he could see it."Because...because...because I'm sick of wanting you and watching someone else have you!", he suddenly screamed passionately, turning to leave only a second later, gone before Ryan had recovered from the severe mental blow. He'd known....but hearing Danny confirm it in such a heated tone, it made it so much more real.
He was out the door as soon as he realized, running out to the parking lot just as Danny cleared the drive and was on his way down the road.

Danny arrived at the hotel in tears, crashing his way into his hotel room and dropping onto the first solid piece of furniture he came upon, his head resting in his hands, fingers pressed into his eye sockets to keep the tears at bay.
He heard a sound from in front of him and looked up, gasping to come face to face with the very person he'd thought to have just escaped.
"I know you're hurting, Danny, and I'm sorry I didn't see that before, but please, don't end our friendship over this." Ryan looked beaten, defeated, and remembering seeing that look on himself so many times in the mirror, Danny relented just a little.
"I have to cut you off totally to get over you, Ryan; I'm sorry but there is no way we can be friends again."
Ryan took a deep breath, hoping against hope that he didn't regret his next question."What if it were to be more than friends?"
Danny's eyes snapped to his, wide with shock. "I....I dunno....I don't think I could say yes to you now after having waited for so long and finally deciding to give up on you. Besides, what about Taylor? You'd really dump him?"
Ryan looked confused." Yes...no...I..I don't know...maybe?" He was almost as fucked up as Danny and that was when Danny realized Ryan might feel the same way. Too bad he was too late.
"I'm dating Jason, Ryan. I can't just break his heart over the possibility of you and I, no matter how much I've always wanted you. The fact is that you lost your chance and you can't get it back..."
With that, Danny stood and held open the door, watching with a numb sort of feeling as Ryan slugged through it, eyes downcast, shoulders slumped. Then, with a long sigh, he broke down, only stopping crying at the sound of the phone.

"Baby? You alright?", came the sound of Jason Pominville's concerned voice at the dull, "Hello."
"Yeah, I'm fine, Jay. Are you gonna be here soon? I need someone to hold me."
There was a rustling on the other line that said Jason was getting ready as fast as possible."I'll be there soon, Danny, don't worry." He hung up, knocking on the door only a minute later.
Danny answered it and fell into his arms, allowing his beau to keep him standing with his strong arms wrapped around his back."I finally talked to him, Jay."
Jason looked down on the slightly smaller man and smiled sadly, pressing a light kiss to his hair."What'd he say, love?"
Danny sighed."He offered me everything I'd always wanted, everything that I'd already found in you, and I had to say no.....to my best friend, had to watch him crumple as he must have had to with me. It was horrible."
Jason held him tightly, rocking him slightly, murmuring, "I'll try to soothe the hurt, Danny, as best as I can."
Danny wet his shoulder with a wave of tears, murmuring, "Thanks, Jay."
His thoughts went on to add
