"A ten tonne polar bear!"

"...Well, it broke the ice, didn't it?"

That's my new favorite pick-up line, which probably tells you volumes about my social life right there.

Frustrating day at work yesterday. I love my job, but it is no fun to have cleared nearly everything off your to-do list on Friday, then go in on Monday and watch five things pile on for every two you ( Read more... )

Working at a coffeeshop (in my case, Starbucks) is the best thing that happened to my LS grades. My study techniques changed not a whit from when I studied at home or in the library, but suddenly, better retention and higher grades.

Hmm. That's really interesting. Do you think it was just because you were stuck behind the counter and forced to adhere to your study tactics, or did it actually have something to do with the atmosphere or the people around you? I personally find that a steady hum of background noise/conversation (though not music--I tend to get sucked into actually listening to music) improves my ability to concentrate on my primary task, which is why I'd do things like making myself read in JJs when I was at Columbia. Everyone else seemed to think I was nuts, though.

Re: editing in coffee shops 2muchexposition August 20 2004, 22:37:18 UTC
Haha... I'm amused by the fact that we both worked on 4&20 in coffee shops, but the other book I'm working on, which was half-written in NYC's subways, was edited almost entirely in transit.

This is my trade secret, actually: getting into an author's head by emulating their behavior.

Okay, maybe not.

Socetew -- have you heard of MC Frontalot? Nerdcore Hiphop is totally established!

Freeipods -- it's not so much that they're not legit, just that it's a pyramid scam... besides, personally I ain't gonna give some website my email address before I even get to hear their sales pitch :) Good luck tho & I hope you get your free ipod, you early-adopter you...!

I signed up for freeipods a while ago, even though I already have an ipod (it's the one thing I got to buy myself from that "permanent" job that wasn't) -- I want a pink mini ipod rather desperately but don't see the point in owning it in addition to the regular one -- unless, of course, one is free.

Now I just have to make up five imaginary friends and sign them up for whatever crap offers they've got.

Hehehe... I bet it is. I hadn't known Frontalot, but my friends went through a pretty intense MC Hawking phase. It's just not the sort of thing I usually expect to run into in musical circles that are almost entirely rap-free.

It's actually not strictly a pyramid scheme, since nothing is flowing from the recruiter to the recruitee: the only money changing hands is between whichever company users voluntarily partake in offers from, and the company running freeipods. Of course, they're *hoping* that the model will fail and you'll get four people to sign up under you but never reach the reward point, but so long as it works out for me (which it seems to be... my order has now been sent to the vendor), I'm okay with that. Anyway, their agenda is pretty well-publicized by now: freeipodguide.com is what won me over, and the Wired article is also pretty interesting.

Do you want to come over and do taxes? akawil needs to do his too, since Columbia didn't send him his W2 until last week. akawil speaks taxes better than I do, but I'm entertaining.

Sorry to hear about all the stress.

*hugs*

Belated thanks for the offer. I wound up doing mine online at TurboTax, which was free because I was under 22 and/or make no money, and got through pretty much okay.

Hey what's up-- thanks for the love-- sorry for the delay in responding.. it's funny you should mention an SF convention though because back in march 2004 I *did* actually perform at Lunacon.. so there we go.

The funnier thing is that I was at that Lunacon and somehow never noticed you on the schedule... though given the fact that I was only there from 11 a.m. on Saturday to 7 a.m. on Sunday, that may be defensible. I'm glad to hear that I'm not completely insane, though. I hope it went over well for you.
