Character: Atoli
Canon: .hack//G.U.
Point in canon: Post .hack//G.U. vol. 3//Redemption. Atoli loses consciousness while playing The World and is pulled into Lucerne Ridge.
Age: Atoli’s player is 16.
Personality: Atoli is a cheerful, friendly girl. She can be a little shy, but she genuinely wants to be friends with everyone and help people to get along. She can be a bit of a busy-body and will push her way uninvited into other people's business. Atoli is a big dreamer; she enjoys taking her time and appreciates the little things in life. Atoli is very trusting and this makes her easy to manipulate. She also has a tendency to make assumptions about people based on what she thinks she knows, and these assumptions can be misguiding. Despite this, she generally tries to look at things from other people's perspectives in order to better understand them.

Atoli doesn't deal well with confrontation and competition. She doesn’t like arguments and she becomes very meek when others are angry. Although she can push herself to stand up for the things she thinks are especially important, doing so makes her feel uncomfortable. Until recently, she had never won anything so, although she is quick to put herself in a losing side's shoes, she doesn't really understand that losing is not a big deal to everyone. Due to her past, Atoli has very low self-confidence and so she has issues with depending too heavily on people she perceives as leaders. She has insecurities about not fitting in and letting people down.

Despite this, she is working hard to overcome her issues and become a stronger, more dependable person. Although she still falters and stumbles, she is learning to stand on her own two feet and fight to protect those that are important to her.

History: In the real world, Atoli is a 16 year old girl named Kusaka Chigusa. She is a troubled girl who has been torn apart trying to live up to the strict expectations of her parents while trying to fit in with her peers at the same time. Because she tries so hard to meet these conflicting goals, she fails at both. This leads her to become depressed and turn to suicide. One day, while surfing suicide websites, she meets Sakaki who befriends her and invites her to join The World:R2. Sakaki quickly gains her trust as the first person to support her and value her. He introduces her to his guild, Moon Tree, which works to help other players.

Atoli first meets Haseo when chastising him for leaving while Sakaki is lecturing him about killing players. She is surprised at his reaction when he mistakes her for Shino, who had a similar character model.

The next time she meets Haseo, she overhears him bad-mouthing Moon Tree to Silabus and Gaspard. Atoli becomes angry and defends Moon Tree and its ideals passionately. She gives him her member address in hopes that he will give her a chance to show him what Moon Tree and its members are really like. Haseo expresses surprise that she can recognize him even though his character was reset and she replies that, even though she didn’t recognize him at first, it wasn’t hard to figure out because Haseo was still Haseo.

Atoli later invites Haseo to visit one of her favorite areas with her. Atoli tries to tell Haseo more about Moon Tree, but he cuts her off and refuses to listen. When they complete the area, Atoli hears a strange sound and asks Haseo to investigate it with her. When she finds the source of the sound, they find a Tri-Edge sign that pulls them into Indieglut Lugh, one of the lost grounds where they briefly encounter Endrance. Atoli begins to follow Endrance, but is stopped by Kuhn when AIDA shows up. Upon seeing AIDA, Atoli hears another loud sound which causes her to lose consciousness, in-game and in real life. She awakens after Kuhn defeats AIDA and apologizes to Haseo for causing trouble, asking for another chance.

Atoli eventually invites Haseo to another area in hopes of getting a second chance to talk to him. She shows him around, taking her time and talking about the Lore of the World. She enjoys herself without realizing that Haseo is only putting on an act to make her think he is enjoying it. Atoli tells Haseo that he and Sakaki are the two people she has really been able to open up around in the World. She admits that she doesn’t really have any interest in leveling; she plays the game more to enjoy the surroundings, stories, and interactions with others. Haseo asks if she has ever considered fighting in the arena and she confesses that she really hates the idea of fighting against other players and competition in general. Atoli has never been able to win anything and always coming in last and being made fun of for it has caused her to avoid anything that requires competition. When Haseo finally loses his temper, she runs away.

When Atoli hears about a setup to have Haseo PKed, she contacts Sakaki and has him interfere on her behalf. Even though Haseo gets mad at her for butting in, she takes the opportunity to apologize for upsetting him the last time they spoke. Atoli offers to fill the empty spot on his arena team, explaining that she realized she had to make more of an effort to understand his side of things. She also expresses an interest in finding out what it’s like to win. Atoli was nervous going into their first match, but after winning became incredibly excited.

Atoli continues to help Haseo with the Demon Palace tournament battles while doing tasks for Sakaki and watching Haseo for him. At the crowning ceremony after winning the title match, Atoli is approached by Ovan who tells her that, in order to help Haseo, she should use her ability to hear to find Tri-Edge. He assures her that only she is capable of finding him and that she will be perfectly safe. When Haseo arrives, Ovan informs her that she uses the same character model as Shino who was very close to Haseo before she fell into a coma. Because of the way Ovan words this, Atoli is led to believe that Haseo was only spending time with her because she looked like the person he cared for. Deeply hurt, Atoli explains to Haseo how much he had meant to her and that he was the reason she tried so hard to become better at the game. She tells him that all that was meaningless if he was never looking at her. She then runs away from the ceremony, crying.

Later, Atoli goes to the Tri-Edge sign at Morrigu Barrow Wall where Sakaki had previously had her listen for special sounds. The mark begins to glow and when she touches it she is pulled in. Atoli finds herself in a large white area that is empty except for a line of coin lockers. She is trying to open one of them when Haseo, Pi, and Kuhn find her. She has a fight with Haseo, accusing him of only putting up with her as a replacement for Shino. He denies it, calling her an idiot, and their fight degenerates from there. They are interrupted by the arrival of Azure Kite. After Haseo defeats Azure Kite, Atoli tries to speak to Haseo, but is distracted when the coin lockers swing open. Atoli begins to move towards the lockers in a trance-like state. Haseo tries to warn her to get away, but before she can, she is attacked by AIDA and rendered unconscious.

When Atoli awakens, she is with the others at Raven’s @Home. She finds she is unable to speak out loud and when she tries to log off, nothing happens. She then realizes she is not sitting at her computer, but is actually inside the game. When she freaks out, the others realize they are all in the game as well. When the others leave to figure out what is going on, she realizes that the data in her right arm has become corrupt. She terrified until she remembers Sakaki and goes off in search of him.

She finds him and explains her situation and he responds by asking if he can count on her to help deal with players not being able to log off. She agrees just as Haseo returns and he chastises her for always running to Sakaki when there is trouble. Atoli gets mad at Haseo for badmouthing Sakaki and Moon Tree and returns to the Raven @Home. Yata reveals that when AIDA attacked Atoli, it stole the Morganna Factor of her epitaph and that the degeneration of her data in the AIDA server could lead to her becoming a Lost One.

When everyone is safely moved back from the AIDA server, Atoli finds that she is able to speak again in the real world, but she has lost the feeling in her hand where the data was cracked on her character. The doctor tells her the symptoms resemble Doll Syndrome. Atoli realizes that doctors won’t be able to heal her paralyzed hand and so she has to work hard in the game to find a solution.

When Haseo registers for the Holy Palace tournament, Atoli finds him and apologizes for getting upset about Shino. She tells Haseo she will join his arena team again in order to help investigate AIDA so she can help Haseo recover her lost epitaph.

When Atoli finds out about Alkaid becoming a Lost One, she blames herself. She thinks that if her epitaph hadn’t been stolen by AIDA, things wouldn’t have gone so badly. Eventually, Haseo and Pi are forced to ask Atoli to refrain from participating in further matches, due to the danger of battling players infected with AIDA without the protection of an Avatar. Atoli is upset by this, but eventually agrees.

When Haseo defeats Helen, the AIDA that stole Atoli’s epitaph and infected Sirius, Atoli’s epitaph, Innis, is restored to her. Atoli’s hand is completely healed with the return of her epitaph, both in game and in real life. After the match, Atoli thanks Haseo for all his hard work helping her regain her epitaph. Sakaki arrives and thanks Haseo as well before taking Atoli back to Moon Tree.

Sakaki tells Atoli that he has an important job for her and takes her to a part of Moon Tree headquarters that she hadn’t previously been aware of. When she asks about it, he only tells her that it is key to achieving the ideals of Moon Tree and asks her if he can depend on her. Atoli affirms this, saying that she is always willing to do anything for him. Sakaki then tells her that she must atone for her “sin.” Atoli is confused, but is soon distracted when she hears the sound associated with AIDA. She tells Sakaki that they must leave but he tells her that it is the sound of her cleansing. He preys on her guilt over all the bad things that have happened since she was attacked by AIDA and convinces her that all the suffering was her fault. He tells her that the entire world loathes her and he will always be the only one to need her so she must obey him completely or accept that she will be alone forever. He then attacks her with AIDA.

Sakaki moves Moon Tree headquarters to an AIDA server and holds Atoli in what had been the throne room. When Haseo arrives, he finds rows of school desks, with a shadow version of Atoli sitting at one separate from the rest in the front. In a hollow voice she asserts that she did her best and relates a time from her real life in which she failed to meet the expectations of her family and friends, even though she tried to act as people told her to. The normal version of Atoli’s character is standing with Sakaki on a floating rock above in a virtually non-responsive state. She then cries out in pain and her shadow-self merges with her, along with AIDA. Sakaki manipulates the infected Atoli into taking on her Avatar form and attacking Haseo. Haseo is able to defeat Atoli and remove AIDA from her.

Now herself again, Atoli laments how she hurt everyone and wonders aloud what she should do. Haseo slaps her and tells her that if she really blames herself, she should figure out how to take responsibility instead of running away and playing the victim. Zelkova arrives and reminds her that she has her friends to help her when things are too difficult to handle alone.

The others track down Sakaki and Atoli insists on going after him with them in order to find out Sakaki’s true character. When they find him, Sakaki accused Atoli of betraying him. She denies it and begins to ask him why he has done the things he has, but he interrupts her, chastising and mocking her for being too needy. He tries again to convince her to join him, but she tells him she can’t agree with his ideals. Sakaki infects himself with AIDA and fights against Atoli, Haseo, and Pi. After he is defeated, Sakaki stumbles off the bridge they are standing on. Ovan shows up and reveals himself to be Tri-Edge before PKing Pi and Atoli. They are rendered unconscious, but eventually recover.

After Haseo faces Ovan, Atoli asks him to meet her in Hulle Granz Cathedral. They each begin to tell each other something, but Atoli stops in horror when she notices Ovan standing behind Haseo. Ovan grabs Haseo and tells him to become strong enough to destroy him.

Atoli continues to adventure with Haseo. When Sakaki takes over G.U., she sticks with the others and begins working outside the jurisdiction of C.C. Corp. When Haseo decides to enter the Sage Palace tournament, Atoli once again volunteers to be on the team, despite the danger from AIDA. She shows Kuhn and Haseo that her Avatar has finally awakened, allowing her to resist AIDA. Team Haseo wins the tournament, removing AIDA from infected players and foiling Sakaki’s plans along the way.

Atoli joins Haseo on his search for Ovan which ends In the Creator’s Room where he must once again face off against his old friend. After Ovan initiates the Rebirth, Atoli is picked up by the Tartarga along with the others. They find out that the problems have begun to spread outside The World, into the rest of the net and the real world. The source of the problems is identified to be Cubia, and the group sets out to achieve the seemingly impossible task of defeating it.

The group manages to succeed in the end, and things go back to normal both in The World and outside of it. The Lost Ones, including Shino, all regain consciousness. Shino invites Atoli to meet with her and Haseo. Atoli can only stumble awkwardly through the conversation and runs off after wishing the two of them good luck. She is pleasantly surprised when she looks back and sees Haseo running after her.

Avatar: Atoli has the ability to use her Avatar, which has increased combat abilities. More importantly, she can use the power of her Avatar to enhance the capabilities of Haseo’s Avatar. Whether she will be able to use her Avatar in Lucerne Ridge remains to be seen.

Items brought along: Atoli is wearing her normal green and white outfit and is carrying her staff, Flame Dancer. She is also carrying five return feathers (which likely have no effect in Lucerne Ridge) and five smoke screens (which provide temporary cover for escape).

Stigma: Atoli’s Stigma is the trouble she caused during the situation with AIDA. Although Haseo has helped her to find a positive way to move on and all the people who were hurt have recovered, she can’t completely let go of the feeling of guilt over having been responsible for so much suffering. Tied in with this guilt is the pain caused by Sakaki’s manipulation and betrayal.

[Sits up and wipes her eyes.]

What happened...?

[Looks around and frowns in confusion.]

Where is this place?

[Glances down at her clothes.]

Am I still in The World? But then…

[Voice becomes panicked.]

Where is my computer? Why is this happening again?!

Log Post:
“You must atone for your sins, Atoli.” Atoli shuddered at Sakaki’s voice. “How many people have been victims of the suffering you caused? How much pain have you caused your friends?”

“No…” Atoli covered her ears. She could still hear the sadness in Haseo’s voice as he explained that Alkaid had fallen into a coma. “No, everything is fine now. Nobody is suffering anymore!”

“Perhaps,” Sakaki’s voice allowed. “But it’s no thanks to you. All you can do is hide behind those stronger than you while they fix all your mistakes. To them, you are nothing but worthless baggage. I am the only one who has ever needed you, Atoli.”

“But,” Atoli hesitated before responding. “But I don’t need you anymore, Sakaki.”

Sakaki’s voice was filled with rage as he responded. “No, you betrayed me! After everything I did for you, after putting up with your incessant whining for so long, you turned your back on me!” The voice took on a mocking tone. “But soon, everyone will realize how worthless you really are, Atoli, and they will turn their backs on you just as you did to me. Then you will be all alone again…”

Atoli cowered in the darkness. When a few moments of silence had gone by, she tentatively asked “Sakaki…?” There was no answer but the empty echo of her own voice.

----------------------

Atoli jerked awake with a gasp. She hated that nightmare and it had never been so vivid before. She sat up and wiped the tears from her eyes. “What happened?”

Looking around, she noticed that her surroundings were completely unfamiliar. The last thing she remembered, she had been playing The World; getting ready to meet Haseo and go adventuring. She couldn’t remember any areas with run down bus stops in The World though. This had to be the real world. “Where is this place?”

As she looked around the dim area, her attention was caught by the white and green of her clothes - colors that stood out in contrast with the rest of her surroundings. If she was wearing that though, it meant she was still in her character. “Am I still in The World? But then…”

Atoli could feel her heart rate speed up as she began to panic. “Where is my computer? Why is this happening again?!” She hadn’t felt this trapped since the incident with the AIDA server. Could AIDA have come back? She needed to find Haseo. If she could find Haseo, everything would be alright.
