I had a bit of highway travel to do this past weekend, and I'd been saving The Nemonite Invasion for such an occasion.
OMG, I MISS Ten and Donna! I ship Ten/Rose, like probably more than I've ever shipped anything ever, but oh, how I love Ten and Donna. It's just such a gorgeous friendship. And it's possible I relate more than a little to Donna's insecurity complex. :)
As is typical with DW novels and "audio adventures", the Nemonite Invasion has Ten and his companion separated for most of the story, and it includes all kinds of plot and OCs I care very little about. And the aliens reminded me a lot of the aliens in Feast of the Drowned. But I'm not in it for the aliens. This story has some adorable Doctor/Donna banter, and some very familiar Ten-isms that made me laugh. And Donna gets to have a romance with a sailor! It was lovely, and actually a little heart-breaking. And then there's this little exchange at the end, which would probably have made me tear up if I was prone to that sort of thing:
He put his arm around her shoulders and pulled her close. "I'm sorry. Fosbrook was a good man. I'm sorry you got hurt. I got you hurt. Without you, Donna Noble, without you I wouldn't be half the man I am. You are wonderful and clever and fun and unique and tireless and determined and amazing and devoted and brave and the best, best company. Thank you."
Donna looked up at him and said quietly, "Thanks. You don't half talk some rubbish."
As the patrol boat came slowly back to harbour, the Doctor held Donna and carried on talking rubbish.
Awwww.
