I just finished F. Scott Fitzgerald's short stories, and now I'm starting Fierce Pajamas, an anthology of humor writing from The New Yorker. I'm really in the mood for 1920s fiction, which is odd since I hated Fitzgerald in high school, and hated everything I read in my Sophisticated Ladies class.  We studied nothing but 1920s/30s fiction and  ( Read more... )

The feminist movement gets associated with women being independent and "go-getters," these days. You don't necessarily have to possess all those qualities to be a feminist though. Simply put, if you believe women should have a choice in which path they take in life and that they should get equal treatment in the things they do, then that makes you a feminist. It's the ability to choose that is key here I think; not the personality traits of most of the people associated with the movement.

It's kind of interesting that the grad school has become the new "Bachelors" degree for many people, similar to how a bachelors degree is now on par with a high school diploma. Unfortunately, achieving a graduate degree tends to be a lot more work then many people expect.

It's unfortunate you disliked college so much, maybe you just never found the right major/field that sparked your interest.

I went from undeclared to German to Graphic Design to English. I chose English just because I'm good at it, but I hate writing papers. I went to the career center at my college and asked them to help me; they had me take an interest inventory test which confirmed that I have no interests. So...I don't know what's wrong with me!

Wow. You're so interesting that the interest test couldn't figure out what fields of interest would interest you. In all seriousness though, those tests kind of suck. I recall taking one back in high school and the results almost seemed to run counter to my personality. I think one of the results was actually "Forest Ranger."

It's kind of interesting just how many people change their major at least once in college. Most people I know did it. I went from Computer science to Psychology, but I did that mostly because I was disillusioned with my future career choice. It's just kind of funny that we go through middle school and high school, where they stress over how we should have some concrete goal for what we want to do. Then when we get to college and 80% of us change our major at least once.
