♛ in depth
Personality:As a result of his childhood, Hisoka is a very closed-off individual who'll do anything to keep others at bay, using verbal assaults, insults, and cold looks. It's far from easy to gain his trust, and to date nobody has. But based on the canon evidence, he would care deeply about the few people who could earn his trust, to the point of putting his life on the line for them. His introvertedness extends to his social life, too- his only notable hobby is that he is an avid reader. A few other words to describe Hisoka would be cautious, grumpy, and maybe pessimistic (though he would probably say he's a realist).

As a result of the way his parents treated him, Hisoka has next to no self-esteem and, when shown kindness, doesn't understand why (as shown in canon, when his partner showed up to rescue him from the main antagonist- Hisoka couldn't understand why Tsuzuki would have come for him, even knowing he (Hisoka) was just bait in a trap), because he doesn't believe he deserves it. Another good  example of this from canon is Tsubaki-hime; he told her he was a Shinigami and hurt himself to show her the proof (his ability to regenerate) and expected her to be afraid or hate him, instead she empathized with him and asked him what his real name was, and it floored him. In addition, canonly he sees himself as weak and wants to bring himself to the same level as Tsuzuki so that Tsuzuki won't have to be protecting him all the time. This implies a strong sense of independence, a desire not to be seen as just a helpless child, and a desire to be able to protect the people he cares about.

He prickles a lot when shown kindness, since he's not used to it. However, consistent kind treatment over a long period of time will eventually wear down his resistance to the friendly overtures, as well as foster trust in him toward the person consistantly showing him kindness. It may also have the affect of him latching onto that person for dear life (I point to Tsuzuki on this one- Tsuzuki, despite his initial dislike for Hisoka, treated him kindly consistently throughout the series, acting like a father or older brother. And by the point of Kyoto, when Tsuzuki wanted to die, Hisoka was ready to die right there with him out of love for Tsuzuki).

Under pressure/ in a crisis, he's mostly able to remain level-headed (in canon, the only exceptions to this are if the situation involves Tsuzuki or Muraki, so it'd be reasonable to say here that he'd only lose his cool about people he has an extreme emotional attachment of some kind toward, good or bad) and he's usually the one to think up a plan or strategy. Also, in such situations, even if someone needs comfort, he's not one to promise everything will be okay, believing it'll be worse for that person in the end if that promise turns out to be a lie, and that sometimes kindness can be a liability. But if the crisis involves someone he cares about, all rationality and calm flies out the window, leaving behind pure desperation to save that person. Conversely, if it involves someone he hates (Muraki) common sense will fly out with window and leave only RAGE and the desire to kill the person with his bare hands.

His morals, for the most part, are left in the grey. But given his behavior in canon, we can conclude that he has a clear-cut idea of what's right and what's wrong, and that his view is mostly in line with the common world view most people have. However, he seems to have no issues with lying, and lies to Tsuzuki in particular several times over big things (telling Tsuzuki meet him somewhere at a certain time, then sneaking off to look at top secret files, promising not to try and make a contract with Kurikara, then going to do so anyway). Other times, however, he acts on the very definition of blunt honesty, offering up his opinion with no regards to others' feelings. Also, I would say his parents' neglect/abuse has definitely left a mark on his psyche; since getting out of their sphere of influence, he's likely come to realize it's wrong as a matter of law to treat a child like he was treated, but in his mind it is most likely justified by his "freakishness." -However, I do have to note that because of his empathic power and his experiences, I doubt he would do the same to his own children if he ever had any.

Canon Background: Hisoka's canon history up until his rape at the age of thirteen is almost identical to the AU history I've made up for him, with the exception that canonly the stately old Kurosaki lineage has their roots in the Kamakura prefecture of Japan. However, canonly, at thirteen, after being raped by Dr. Muraki, the man erased Hisoka's memory of the attack and cursed him to die slowly over the next three years.

After his death, Hisoka became a shinigami and was partnered with the main character of the manga, Asato Tsuzuki, after an initial misunderstanding where he almost shot Tsuzuki, believing him to be the suspect in their current case, the Nagasaki Vampire murders. At first he could barely tolerate his new partner, but that began to change during their first case together, when Tsuzuki came to rescue Hisoka from Muraki, even though he knew that the boy's kidnapping had just been a ploy by Muraki to get ahold of Tsuzuki himself. From that case onward, they started to slowly build up a trusting partnership, with Tsuzuki showing Hisoka more  kindness than his own parents ever had (at one point in the manga, he made a reference to Tsuzuki as 'mother, father, brother' iirc).

They worked several cases together after Nagasaki;  most notable are the Devil's Trill case, where they saved a boy with an eerie resemblance to Hisoka from an accidentally-inherited contract with a demon, and Hisoka ended up comforting Tsuzuki when he failed to save a little girl named Kazusa, who's life had been the price of the contract; the King of Swords, where an investigation into disappearances aboard a Hong Kong based cruise ship turned into a serial murder case, perpetrated by Tsubaki Kakyouin, the daughter of the ship's owner, under the influence of Muraki, who Hisoka killed at her request and afterward confided to Tsuzuki his fear of becoming like Muraki and cried in his partner's arms; and finally Kyoto, the climax of the series (imo) and the last arc of the anime.

Muraki committed a string of serial murders in Kyoto to draw out the shinigami, and in particular Tsuzuki; after killing a high school girl and telling her best friend the girl had died because she'd seen gods of death, the girl treated the Shinigami like monsters at every turn, defying their attempts to protect her, which wounded Tsuzuki especially. Muraki accused Tsuzuki of being a demon and set it up so that he would have to kill the girl, and Tsuzuki lost it, going insane with grief and regret, and, despite earlier assurances fom Hisoka that he was in fact human, following through with the same suicidal urge that had landed him a job as a Shinigami 70 years ago. At that point, Hisoka showed up and begged Tsuzuki to exist, even if it was only for him, and with help from their coworker Tatsumi, Tsuzuki's suicide attempt was aborted.

The last scene of the anime is of the two standing outside staring up at the stars, as Hisoka declares that someday he'll surpass Muraki, and Tsuzuki agrees- they'll get there together.
AU Background: Hisoka was born in Fienal on El continent, into a stately old family that valued status very highly. When his empathic powers began to manifest themselves, his parents saw them as freakish and not fit for an heir of theirs. They mostly kept him confined to a basement closet until he was thirteen. At that time, he snuck out of the house one night and was raped by a strange man dressed all in white. After the rape, which he never told his parents of, suspecting (probably rightly) that they wouldn't care, he became something of a behavior problem for the next three years, subtly rebelling against his parents and in particular his father by using his power. Then, at sixteen, he received an invitation to the academy, which he accepted despite his family's protests.

At present he can't really control his powers and is forced to feel the strong emotions of anyone nearby, and physical contact only makes it worse. However, this is mostly due to the strength of said talent, and with training, his power could have any number of practical applications in other kinds of magic (one that I've seen brought up is channeling spirits, which supposedly works better when the channeler and the spirit have an empathic link).

Part of his empathy is the ability to "merge" his mind with another person's (as defined in canon), but he wouldn't use this much as it hurts him a lot and it makes the empathy a two-way street and he doesn't trust people enough for that. It'd have to be pretty dire straights when he did.

I should also note that his health hasn't been the best for the past three years- he'll faint if he over-exerts himself and he's extremely sensitive to both heat and cold. Also he doesn't build muscle well and never has. His healing ability is pretty minor, letting him recover from wounds/sickness just slightly faster than normal. *Since it's happened canonly, I'd like him to be able to "share" that ability with the "mind meld" thing, but if that's too much I will drop that.
Appearance: Hisoka is small and slight for his age, perhaps 5'3" and 100 lbs at the most. He has dirty blonde hair (that looks light brown under dim lights) that always looks mussed up no matter what he does with it. His most striking feature, according to most, are his eyes. They are a bright shade of emerald green, wide, and thickly lashed, prompting many comparisons to a porcelain doll. In addition to that, he's got a pretty face in general, which has attracted perverts in the past. *coughMurakicough*

Hisoka is not picky about what he wears, and seems to care a lot more about comfort than style. His outfits usually consist of jeans, a long-sleeved shirt or a light sweater, and sneakers, and sometimes a denim jacket or a blazer. For a formal occasion, he'll do dress pants and shoes, a long-sleeved shirt and a tie.

Injuring/Maiming: Sure, why not. He's bound to get into a fight with somebody sometime. Um, the only thing I would say no to is rape- I will not roleplay that kind of scenario under any circumstances. And besides, Soka-muse and I agree that once was more than enough.
Killing (in a way that allows revival): I'm going to say no? Not for any particular reason, just that I don't like killing off my muses, even if they are going to come back.
Hugging, Kissing, etc.: Oh, feel free. Just don't be surprised if he flails and spazzes. He's not used to affectionate gestures. ^_^;;
Deaging, Genderswapping, etc.: Go nuts.
Mindreading: Um, I wouldn't mind this per se, but- I wouldn't want the person doing the mind reading to be able to pick up on every gory little detail of Hisoka's past, and especially not the rape.
