Zacky was tired.

He was not only physically tired, but emotionally as well. He hadn’t slept in almost a week and he was tired of playing Brian’s games. These twisted fights that tore at Zacky, the yelling and the screaming, the fists and the fury.

This was not the life he was promised when they were kids. This was not the boy he met back then. He didn’t even know Brian anymore.

A lone light bulb, swinging from it’s cord in the ceiling, it’s flickering light, a better representation of his heart than anything else. Zacky was tired. As he laid on the tattered couch in their living room, a disgruntled spring jabbing him in the back, he thought about when it first started. It didn’t used to be this way. He used to care. Zacky was tired of playing games.

With a yawn Zacky heaved himself up off the ancient piece of furniture, sighing when he looked out their dirty window, seeing Brian covered in dirt and grime as he worked on their rusty car. This was not the life he was meant to live. Zacky was tired, and he hadn’t slept in almost a week.

Sometimes, which meant most times, when he and Brian fought, Zacky thought about what his life would be life if he left Brian. Would anything be better? He laughed bitterly to himself. It couldn’t get much worse.

As he pack his things, taking only what he needed or what meant something to him, Zacky dragged his frayed suitcase to the door, glancing around the house that held in misery for so many years, and he turned back around. He pushed the squeaky screen door open, stepping out and listening to the loud screech and bang of the door, simply out of habit. He didn’t turn around as Brian questioned him. He didn’t turn around when he heard the footsteps pounding behind him. When he did finally turn around it was simply because Brian had turned Zacky’s body towards him.

“What are you doing?” Brian asked, more desperation in his voice than Zacky had ever remembered it having.

“Goodbye Brian.”

Zacky was tired of Brian.
