I shop at our equivalent of Wal-Mart, Asda (which is now owned by Wal-Mart, incidentally) and although it's the cheapest supermarket around, quite a lot of its products are of poor quality. They aren't so terrible that I eschew the low prices and convenience for a less accessible supermarket but believe me, if I had the money and a car I probably would shop somewhere else.
Certainly, public transport's the way to go if environmental issues are a concern! I realise that over there it's not always feasible but here, with a fairly extensive and good quality public transport system, people have far less of an excuse. I see an awful lot of bikes around here, too.
