Walking a path that leaves a path of destroyed, broken people in the process is not that healthy. That's what this girl does though. I'm not the first, nor will I be the last, which is what's really sad and destructive.
I don't think I know the back story there, but it sounds like you did him a favor walking away. If it's not what you want, then you could never be happy together, and it was nobler not to try. I imagine I'd try to look at that text, send him some light and love, and release him each time.
