“You think Bridge is going to be alright?” Syd asked quietly, sitting down on her bed and pulling her knees up, resting her chin on top of them.
“Sure,” Jack replied easily as Z sat down next to Syd, her fingers toying with blonde curls. “Just needs a couple of days to get over muscle strain, that’s all. He’ll be fine.” Although, confidence aside, unease still lingered. Whatever it was the five of them had, it had stabilised him a little from the panic of Bridge’s abduction, but all of them were still feeling the side-effects in one way or another and probably would for at least another couple of days while they got themselves back together. “And besides,” he continued lightly, “he’s got Sky hovering over him; he’s not going anywhere until he’s all healed up.”
“Because Sky’s so good for that,” Z interjected, although the usual bite of her sarcasm was barely there.
“Sure he is. As long as he’s not the one who needs to stay in bed.”
Syd snorted in amusement. “The last time Sky was sick it took threats, bribery and blackmail to keep him in bed.”
Z perked up. “What kind of blackmail?” she grinned and Syd grinned back.
“Compromising photos,” she said innocently. “Well,” she corrected, “not exactly compromising, but definitely embarrassing.”
“You still have them, right?”
Syd sighed. “No. When he got better he tricked them off me.” She pouted but held firm against various attempts at getting the details, eventually flopping backwards to lie flat on her bed, staring at the ceiling. After a moment’s hesitation, Z joined her, resting her head on Syd’s shoulder. Jack, perched on the edge of the bed, took a minute or so to enjoy the view, then poked idly at the nearest body, which happened to be Syd.
“Scoot over,” he prompted and after a tiny amount of grumbling the two girls wriggled closer to the far edge of the bed so he could join them. A moment later though, he sighed. “This is so not comfortable.”
“They’re not made for three people,” Syd reminded him and he stood up, wincing a little as he did so, swearing that he could feel his spine popping.
“You’re telling me,” he muttered and there was a quiet sigh of aggravation from Z before there came a disturbing grating sound. He turned round in time to see two clones pushing Z’s bed across the room to rest next to Syd’s, but he didn’t catch on in time to get out of the way other than by reflexively phasing out and he frowned when he found himself standing in the middle of Z’s bed. “Very funny,” he said flatly, glaring at Z’s amused face and ignoring the giggling coming from Syd’s direction.
“Well if you won’t get out of the way what else do you expect?”
“How about a little warning?” he countered, stepping out of the bed before flopping down on top of it with a sigh. Now that was better. And when Syd shuffled closer it was even better, because now he could drape an arm round her and…
“Hey!” Syd protested between giggles. “Ticklish! Stop it!”
He grinned and ignored her protests as he continued to trail his fingers wherever he could reach. Until he hit a sensitive spot and Syd sucked in a deep breath that came out as a soft moan of pleasure. He stopped, fingers hovering over the spot in question, Z suddenly very focused as well. Hesitantly he repeated the action, touch feather-light instead of teasing, and he smiled softly as he got the same reaction.
Tentatively he brushed his fingers against the hem of Syd’s uniform jacket, wondering if he should really push this right now. Syd, however, didn’t seem to mind, which was all the permission he needed, and if either of the girls wanted to put a stop to this they were more than capable of doing just that. Jack paused in his explorations as Z joined in, capturing Syd’s mouth with hers and that was just as arousing as it had been the first time. He could definitely watch that for a while. Would have, too, if Syd hadn’t demanded he get back with the program.
“Shouldn’t Bridge and Sky be here as well?” Syd gasped, squirming a little as Jack and Z directed their full attention to her, various bits of clothes now scattered on the floor.
“I highly doubt Bridge would be up for sex right now,” Jack murmured into her neck. “And Sky’s all over-protective momma bear, so likewise.”
“Good point,” Syd conceded breathlessly.
Jack lifted his head for a moment and met Z’s gaze. Cheeks flushed, mouth curved in a wicked smile, Z was a living embodiment of temptation and it took a great deal of willpower to look away and refocus his attention on Syd. Kissing Z was one thing, touching her was a whole other story. He wasn’t ready for that yet.
A sudden thought struck him and he paused abruptly, Syd whining a little in protest at the loss of sensation. “I don’t suppose either of you have anything?” he hazarded, not overly optimistic; sex wasn’t exactly encouraged at SPD and it wasn’t as if they’d really planned on getting into anything physical so soon. This thing they had going was only just starting to sink in anyway, so they were decidedly less than prepared. Z shook her head anyway.
“No,” she replied slowly. “I don’t.”
Syd groaned in chagrin. “Me either. And besides, do you have any idea what would happen if they were found in room inspection?”
Jack cocked an eyebrow at her. “Wow, when did Sky come in the room?”
Syd smacked his shoulder reprovingly. “Not funny.” Then she sighed. “Are we stopping?” she asked mournfully and Jack grinned at her.
“No. We’ll just need to improvise, that’s all.” He leant forward to nip at her bottom lip to emphasise the point.
“SPD does encourage creativity,” Z agreed innocently and Jack smirked at her.
“And who are we to ignore that?” he continued, just as innocently.
Syd flicked a finger against his chest. “Less talking,” she prompted. “Kissing’s better.”
Z laughed. “Whatever, Princess.” Jack had one moment to take in her head dipping down before Syd’s fingers latched onto his hair and pulled him back.
“Pushy,” he murmured and Syd let out a soft huff of annoyance/amusement.
“Horny,” she corrected and Jack smiled against the curve of her collarbone. Horny he could do something about.

Settling down in contentment Jack was somewhat surprised to find Z in the middle of himself and Syd, but he wasn’t feeling particularly curious as to how that had happened. Closing his eyes Jack simply let himself feel, arm tucked easily around Z’s waist. If he concentrated hard enough it wouldn’t be too difficult to pretend it was back before SPD, back when they’d slept like this when it was too damn cold to sleep alone, back when sleeping cuddled together didn’t have dangerous undercurrents. However, the bed and the bedsheets, not to mention Syd, firmly kept that delusion at bay and he opened his eyes again to find Z watching him silently. He gave her a faint smile and let his fingers wander across her cheek. Z smiled back, something like relief in her eyes, then she too settled down for the night, head ducked under his chin.
Sparing a moment to run his fingers through her hair, Jack let his gaze drift over Z and Syd, a sense of peace brushing away any lingering doubts. He might not be ready for this kind of development in his relationship with Z, but it was a start.
