Summary: Sam has a very painful vision.
Sam was clutching his head in the passenger seat of the Impala. Dean quickly pulled over and went to open Sam's door.
It was happening more often now, those visions of Sam's. They seemed stronger, too.
"Dude, you're bleeding," Dean grabbed for a rag in the backseat.
Sam hardly heard him as he tried to breathe through the pain piercing his skull.
"Your nose," Dean pointed. "It's bleeding."
Sam took the rag.
"This is something new." Dean asked, "Think you should be seeing a doctor?"
Sam just shrugged, wishing he knew.
Dean just sat with him until the bleeding stopped.
Title: Cat and Mouse
Prompt: 4 - house of mirrors
Summary: Dean and John have an argument.
"We need to end this!" Dean's voice was angry.
"End what?" his father's voice was steady.
"This stupid cat and mouse," Dean replied. "Sammy and I try to find you, you pop up for a little bit and then you're off again and we're back to looking."
John's face was unreadable.
"It isn't fair, Dad! You should see how it tears Sammy up."
"That isn't my intent."
"It doesn't matter!"
"I have to run again, Dean." John's eyes looked sad. "I have to keep my boys safe."
"Is this ever going to end?"
"When the demon's dead, Son." John promised.
Title: Simple Things from Younger Days
Prompt: 29 - Ocean
Summary: Sam and Dean take a break on the road.
It was an unscheduled stop in a small town. The autumn sun had made Dean want the joy of ice cream in the summertime. Sam seemed surprised that Dean had stopped, but at least he'd understood why it had to be ice cream. It was a favorite for them as kids. Besides, they weren't actually heading for a hunt. They were just meandering through the states, looking for a hunt.
The small ice cram parlor was empty except for the guy behind the counter. Dean and Sam got their frozen treats and leaned against the Impala as they ate. They saw the little intricate parts of small town life. A young mother with a stroller and a toddler in hand. A mail carrier that didn't need a truck to deliver the mail. People greeted each other on the street by name. For the boys, it was like watching an updated Mayberry right in front of their eyes.
“Hey, Sammy,” Dean pushed himself off the Impala, “I think we have some time to kill, don’t you?”
“I don’t have any plans for today,” Sam replied, wondering what Dean had in mind.
Dean came back with sandwiches, drinks, and snacks. “Let’s get in,” he nodded toward the car. Sam smiled and got in the passenger side.
Dean drove to a nearby lake and stopped. “We’re here,” he announced as he shut off the car, grabbed his purchases and got out.
They stood by the Impala and had their lunch spread out on the trunk. With his mouth full, Dean said, “Isn’t this peaceful?”
Sam nodded. “I can even hear the birds.”
“We don’t get much silence between hunts. I miss some of the little things that we used to do.”
“Like what?” Sam asked, surprised to hear Dean talking like that.
“I dunno,” Dean looked off. “Getting up early for Saturday cartoons.”
“Do you want to set an alarm for Saturday mornings?”
“Hell no,” Dean replied. “They probably don’t show ‘Thundercats’ anyway.” He was silent for a moment. “Eating warm cookies. Just the feel of the sun, like we have now.”
“It is nice to take a break, Dean. We could do this more often.”
“Oh, I’d kill for a soft bed that I could sleep in every night. One that had a familiar feel to it, not just one that I spent a night or two in.”
“I feel at home at Bobby’s,” Sam offered. “You know, the bunk beds. Those were always nice to sink into because no matter what had changed with us, they remained the same.”
“I don’t know if the bunk beds would still hold us, Sammy,” Dean smiled looking sideways at him. “We have grown a little.”
“Yeah, I guess,” Sam conceded.
They stood there, not talking, just taking in the fresh air that rustled the fallen leaves, listening to the lake lap the shore, and letting their minds wander back to simpler times.
“We still stay up late to watch the old black and white horror movies,” Sam smiled.
“And you’re still my geeky brother. Always wanting to learn something new.”
“You still have a hard time avoiding the women,” Sam grinned.
“I sure am glad we have our system in place so I can just give you the signal and you’ll rescue me from a conversation gone bad,” Dean couldn’t help but smile back.
“At least we still have each other. This hunting thing would be too crazy if we were doing it alone.”
Dean sighed,” When I was hunting alone, I don’t remember laughing much. Although, I also didn’t have any reason to argue.”
“We don’t argue that much. Just when we’re in the car.”
“And that is how often, again?” Dean a smirk.
They both laughed. “It’s worth the disagreements, Sammy.” Dean was suddenly serious. “I know I don’t tell ya much, but I missed you having my back when you were at college. I’m sorry Jess had to die, but I am glad to have you back.”
“Me too.”
