The Necklace

"Luna, what is this red butterbeer cap? It's not from Hogsmeade, is it?" Neville helped clip the necklace back around Luna's neck.

Luna turned her bright blue eyes on him. Once, Neville might have blushed under her gaze, but he was getting much better. These escapades into the nude at his house while his Gran was out playing cards with her friends were definitely helping that. They had been dating for a few months now, and things were getting serious. Neville was a very devoted person. Luna was a very weird person.

"No. It's not from Hogsmeade."

"Why do you wear it all the time?"

"Why are all those bubble-gum wrappers in your desk drawer?"

"You were snooping!"

"Maybe." She still hadn't answered his second question, but the vibes he was getting said she didn't want to talk about it anymore. He finished tying her necklace on, and went to work on his own shoelaces. They were quiet for a long moment, until Luna put her arms around his waist and pulled him back onto the bed beside her.

"I'll tell you about the butterbur caps." She said.

"You don't have to."

"But I will. As you may have guessed, they do have to do with my mother, as I guessed that the bubble-gum wrappers have to do with your mother."

"Er...”

"We used to collect them. They are an excellent ward against munticles (They obscure the lenses of glasses when you're not looking) and also quite shiny. It's always handy to have one around."

"But you don't wear glasses Luna."

"She did."

"Oh."

"This red one...she painted it for me. It was going to be a project. Since I liked butterbeer caps anyway, we were going to paint a bunch and make a necklace out of them. But then she died. The next day."

"I'm sorry."

"I'm alright."

But Neville could tell that it bothered her. Those dreamy blue eyes that he loved so much weren't quite as far away as usual. They seemed rooted in the reality of her mother's death. She fingered her necklace absently.

"Sometime I'll tell you about the bubble-gum wrappers." Neville promised.

"Not now?" Luna asked.

"Nope. I've got something better for now. Hold on for one second." He stood up and went to the door. "I'll be right back."

A few minutes later he returned with a stick of his grandmother's lipstick. He waved his wand over it and performed a charm, then smeared it on his lips.

"Come here." He sat down next to Luna and leaned forward. She giggled a bit, thinking that he meant to kiss her lips, but instead he planted a large smooch on the butterbeer cap next to the red one that Mrs. Lovegood had painted.

"Permanent Painting Charm." he said. "Now you have two red caps, from two people who love you."

Luna smiled brightly, but a tear was springing up in her eye. "Thank you." She said. She wiped a bit of the lipstick off of Neville's mouth, and then kissed him.
