Good-Byes

Luna's head drooped almost into her lap, tears falling onto the thick parchment below.

Dear Miss Lovegood,

Neville stood behind her, rubbing her back and stroking her hair, but it didn't seem to do any good.

We lament to inform you,,,,

Her hands clenched her robes, but she didn't shake or sob.

...that Mister Lucas Lovegood has passed away.

She knew what she had to do. She had even known that this was coming. But she hadn't been there for him. Her daddy, who had raised her, who had forbidden her to run off with the Herbologist boy, was dead. Luna had denied his request that she stay with him and take over The Quibbler, refused to listen when he said that there was nothing for her in Egypt with that boy, and now he was dead.

"Neville, I have to go."

"I know." he said.

"I don't want to."

"It's ok."

Luna folded the letter and put it on the table in front of her, pushing it away.

"Alone." She said.

Neville didn't react, but continued to stroke her hair and back. Luna wondered for a moment if he knew what she meant. Hell, she hardly knew what she meant by it. Usually, separating herself from the only person who could offer any sort of support or comfort would be the worst idea ever. But she needed the time. She needed to see who she was, and figure some things out. Make amends.

"I understand." But he didn't. Luna knew that he didn't. She knew that this was going to hurt him, probably as much as she was hurting inside. When she looked up at him, her bright blue eyes were rimmed with red, and her cheeks were flushed.

"I'm sorry Neville."

"Luna, this isn't your fault. This is life." She stood and faced him, one hand on his waist, the other lingering on the table beside the letter.

"No Neville, this is death." she said softly.

"Thank you for everything. Maybe someday...we can..." She kissed him on the lips, then took the letter and walked out the door. They both knew that they probably wouldn't see each other for many years. Maybe they would send letters for a few years, and then maybe meet for lunch, but things would never be the same. They each had their obligations to fulfill, to themselves and to their families.

Luna paused on the doorstep summon her cloak and fasten it around her neck. She walked half way down the street, and then with a soft pop, she was gone.
