It had been a great practice that day. Yukimura-buuchou had come back, fully back to normal and recovered, his skill still putting even Sanada in his place. But Sanada didn’t mind at all that day, he had even slightly smiled that day.
It had been a great practice.
Niou hadn’t even had to say a word, Yagyuu had simply understood. Niou hadn’t needed to signal that he was running right, he just knew that Yagyuu would be going left. They worked that day. They were what other the doubles pairs tried to be. And in the clubhouse afterwards, having idled long enough for everyone else to have left before him, having tapped Yagyuu on the shoulder before he walked out the door, Niou had simply asked to be waited up for.
Alone in the clubhouse, where they had as a team come laughing everyday after practice, Niou Masaharu kissed his partner without warning. All smiles and confidence, still high on excitement. It had been a great practice, and things could be perfect now, because it was okay. They were partners, they understood each other.
Only, it took him three seconds to notice that it wasn’t okay.
Tearing away, Yagyuu’s eyes had been disbelieving as his hands shook and his lips turned in disgust. He had stepped backwards, the door his way out; “I don’t think I’m interested in playing tennis anymore.”
Niou found him years later, the air fare having been well worth it even if his friends didn’t totally understand why he was going. Japan was too small a country anyway, and he had been wanting to get out. He found that perfect partner of his, that lover that couldn’t look at him, the one that had never wanted to pick up a racket again, steadily pushing his way through the U.S. Open. Niou’s smile was bitter. Sardonic. Ironic.
Yagyuu was par for the course on the fifteenth hole.
