"H, Hiei?" she cursed the stutter that came out of her mouth.

Kagome had waited so many days to see him again, and all her shock and hope only served to cause her words to get caught on her tongue. It was embarrassing, especially in front of him: perfection defined, in her world. She bet he had never stuttered at all in his life, however long it may have been.

"You're really here?"

"Even I doubt your human senses are that bad. Wasn't my first answer to that ridiculous question enough?"

Despite the cold, mocking tone, she felt nothing but happiness. It filled her up from the deepest parts of her being and caused her eyes to once again fill with tears. But they were tears of such happiness and joy that it welled up in her and sought escape from her eyes. Beauty such as it could not be held in and she had never been one to hold in any of her emotions. It was the reason she was called an idiot more often than naught by the demon in front of her and another lost to the past, but she didn't care. She loved him too much to care.

That was the main reason why she flung herself towards him without a second thought. She didn't care how desperate it made her seem, or that she knew he wasn't fond of physical contact, or that he was dripping wet. No, all that mattered was that he was back and that he was all right. And all she was focused on was getting to him, feeling that he was real, smelling his entirely masculine scent... Those were the only things that truly mattered, she learned that long ago.

His cloak fell to the ground in a wet, crumpled mess. It's lingering warmth and scent paled in comparison to the real thing. Before Kagome buried her face in his chest and wrapped her arms around him, she swore she finally caught him off-guard and that he looked shocked.

While she knew he wasn't expecting her to embrace him, she wasn't expecting him to allow her. Kagome expected a repeat of all the other times she touched him: him jerking away or pushing her away. Not some strange form of acceptance and letting her latch onto him.

"You've changed," she murmured into his chest, too content with feeling his warm body against her cheek to speak louder.

"You haven't."

Kagome glanced up at his attempt at humor. Whatever he went off to do changed him in quite a few ways. It would take time for her to tell if she like this new Hiei better.

"You've also gotten stronger."

He glanced down at her, carmine eyes flashing with some kind of mocking approval. "Glad to know you haven't been slacking in your training."

She snuggled against his chest wanting to be away from the piercing gaze of those demonic eyes. If she was looking at them, she knew she wouldn't have the strength or courage to say the words that were burning the tip of her tongue.

"Never leave me again."

Those whispered words were out of her mouth before she realized it. All his warmth and safety (though she knew he would kill her if he knew she thought him "safe") soothed the pain of the last two weeks. They just came out, unbidden and unwanted.

She could feel him stiffen under her fingers. Unbidden by her, unwanted by him. Their... whatever it was... was based on mutual respect and trust. She didn't have to wait around for him and he didn't have to show up. Whispered words bordering on promises like those were exactly the kind they didn't need. But she did.

But he never loosened his hold on her despite how uncomfortable she knew he must be feeling. Something really had to have changed while he was gone, something that gave him the strength to reveal the softer side hiding just beneath the surface. Kagome looked up at him, her eyes searching for answers she knew she wouldn't find. The same carmine eyes greeted her, but some of their coldness had been chipped away. Though his glare had become softer towards her, this was something new.

He lowered his face closer to hers. Unexpected, she blushed and tried to jerk back only to have him tighten his hold. For the first time she saw him smirk close up and couldn't help the quickening of her heart. He was too close, too warm, too Hiei. If leaving for two weeks could change him to the degree she was face-to-face with, she half-wished it would happen more often.

"Go get some sleep before you become too useless tomorrow."

His breath and lips teased over hers, clouding her mind. It took a second for his words to register and she swallowed past the lump in her throat. His words made no promises. Like all the other demons she had met, he made none he could not keep. If she had been relying on his words, and his words only, the furious beating of her heart would have broken in two because she wanted the promised lies.

But she wasn't -- she had his actions to consider. And they told a very different story.

"I'm glad you're back... Goodnight, Hiei."

Kagome leaned forward and placed a quick kiss to the corner of his mouth. It was all she could bring herself to do given all that had transpired in half-a-month.

All she heard in reply was a non-committal grunt, and she knew things were back to the way they once had been. Or perhaps, better than they had been. It seemed as if some invisible line had been crossed, one that could not be redrawn or stepped over again between them. The awkward tip-toeing around had been left behind, and she had no way of telling if what would replace it would be better.
