Adele watched with amusement as Rani's spine stiffened. She half expected more of a reaction in the girl's eyes as she turned, smoothing out her white lab coat, but there was none. Just a coolness.
"You wanted something, Commander?"
"They're not like us. Dirty little grubs in the earth. You should forget about them."
"I cannot. They're human -- like us."
Adele snorted softly, looking the girl over quickly. The fox genes were plain in the copper of her hair, the green of her eyes.
"We're more than human."
"Or less."
"Watch yourself."
"No. You watch yourself."
