“Thank you for your invitation. Please inform Kaname-sama that I will be in attendance,” Ouri-sama murmured as he accepted the sealed letter. Ruka lowered her eyes as she released her grip on the envelope. She squinted as her vision blurred.
Suddenly she pitched forward and crashed into the Pureblood. Ouri-sama merely looked down at the female vampire in his arms as Kain immediately came to her side.
Akatsuki took her into his arms. His voice was tightened with worry. “Ruka?”
“I’m okay,” she murmured after gathering her bearings. She stood up shakily on her feet. Beads of sweat dotted her forehead. The Pureblood made a sound of understanding.
“It seems that she is in need of blood,” he noted observantly. But a smile of regret appeared on his lips. “Unfortunately, I do not carry a supply of blood tablets.”
Kain’s lips tightened at the corners. Of course the vampire lord wouldn’t have any. Not when there were servants to feed off of. Akatsuki didn’t have any on his person and he was sure that Ruka also didn’t bring any. He contemplated his options.
“There is a parlor a few doors down the hallway. You may rest there until your companion is well,” the Pureblood vampire told them. A servant came to his side at his beckoning and waited to direct Kain and Ruka to the chamber.
“Thank you for your generosity, Ouri-sama. Please pardon our intrusion,” Kain said diplomatically. He held Ruka by the shoulders. She muttered a similar apology and allowed her friend to guide her.
Once in the room, Ruka practically slumped into the chaise. Kain squatted in front of her, noting her pasty complexion and her sudden labored breathing. He reached out and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. Ouri’s servant watched them from the doorway.
“If you prefer not to do it, she may always feed from one of the maids,” the servant told him. “Ouri-sama has also offered his blood.”
As flicker of anger passed through his amber eyes, Kain turned his head to look over his shoulder and stated coolly. “That won’t be necessary.”
“Very well, please take your time,” the servant bowed and closed the door behind him.
Sucking in a unsteady breath to calm the sudden irritation in his system, the young man released it in a long ‘whoosh’ and it rustled Ruka’s bangs. That offer was too generous, too dangerous.
Even he could not imagine the types of visions that Ruka would see in that blood-the battles and bloodshed that Ouri-sama might have faced in the millennia that he lived. He did not want her mental state torn apart by the brutality of the Pureblood’s memories.
“Akatsuki?” Ruka whispered as she turned her head to face him.
Kain maintained his passive face and drew a sharp nail across his wrist. He guided Ruka’s lips to the blood bubbling to the surface. He encouraged her lightly, “Drink.”
He watched as the female hesitated before gently lapping the dribble of blood. He did not flinch as her elongated fangs pierced his flesh. As she sucked in short sips, Kain allowed his free hand to slide through her long hair briefly.
If the only way he could do so was by offering her his blood, then he would gladly do so. Anything for her.
