"Pardon the intrusion, Kaname-sama. We’ve completed the mission,” Kain said with a quick bow. Ruka stood slightly behind him. Her eyes were concentrated at the Pureblood vampires seated across the blazing fireplace. Stray rays of sunlight peeked through the heavy drapes.
“I’m glad to see that you’ve both returned safely,” Kaname said from his seat in front of the fire. Yuuki was asleep with her head in his lap. She stirred briefly but Kaname’s gentle petting soothed her back to her dreams. His face was hidden partially by his hair.
Akatsuki and Ruka stood by the doorway and made no further moves to go into the room. “It’s late. Feel free to use the guestrooms in the left wing. You can make your report after you’ve rested.”
“Yes, Kaname-sama,” the two noble vampires answered. Kain made to turn around and leave, but Ruka remained standing in place. Before Kain could speak up, Kaname asked, “Is there something the matter, Ruka?”
She stared unblinkingly at the serene scene that the Pureblood vampires created before bowing her head lowly. Her hands tightened at her sides. “No, nothing is the matter, Kaname-sama. Have a good night.”
The vampire king nodded curtly and the two stepped out of the room. As they ambled through the hallway, Akatsuki asked, “Do you want to go home?”
“No, it’ll be rude to disregard Kaname-sama’s generosity when he extended his offer to us. It doesn’t trouble me to return tomorrow night,” Ruka reasoned. She then turned her head up to look at her companion directly. “Please, pretend you didn’t see that side of me, Akatsuki.”
“Hm,” Kain grunted in assent. The heels of their shoes thumped gently against the floor.
“I always,” she paused to wonder if she should continue, but decided to change her train of thought. “No, sometimes, I wish that I can turn back time.”
He glanced briefly at her. Well, that was a strange thought to have considering that the lifespan of a vampire reached farther than the average human. Vampires also aged very well given the number of centuries they could live. He indulged in her musing though. “How far back do you wish to go?”
“I don’t know. It’s a silly thought to begin with,” she amended with a small frown.
It didn’t take much to realize where her sudden desire stemmed from. Having known Ruka since childhood, Kain learned that Ruka was actually quite a simple woman despite her haute-couture appearance and her proud air. In her heart, she worried about her family, her friends, and above all else, the happiness of Kaname-sama.
“Not at all; we all have things we wish to change in the past,” he told her.
Ruka looked at him a hint of her hidden childish curiosity as if she never once thought he would have such sentiments. “Oh? Even you, Akatsuki?”
“Of course, even me.” He looked down the hallway, lost momentarily in the visions of the past. Maybe, if he went back, he could prevent the meeting between Kaname-sama and Hanabusa. That way, Kaname-sama would never be introduced into Hanabusa, Ruka, and his lives and he wouldn’t be walking in this eerie mansion. Ruka would have never devoted her being to Kaname-sama’s service and be placed in perilous situations. He could save her from the severe heartbreak then and now.
“Akatsuki? Akatsuki, are you okay?” Ruka pulled him to a stop by his elbow.
“Hm?” He blinked and realized they walked past the corridor leading to their guestrooms. He winced inwardly when he caught Ruka’s suspicious stare. “Sorry.”
She tiptoed and pressed a hand to his forehead with a frown on her lips. “You’re not sick and not telling me again, are you?”
Smiling at her concern, he gently brushed her hand aside. “No, I’m not sick. I just got lost in memory lane. Now let’s get some rest.”
It was just too bad he would never have the way back.
