Lesson Learned
“Mooom, can I
help?” Five year old Edward whined, tugging on Trisha Elric's
dress. “I wanna make the cake too!”
“Yeah!”
Alphonse chimed in from the floor, looking up at her innocently and
curious.
Trisha sighed and
smiled at them. “Alright, sit down at the table.”
Both boys tore
over to the table, as fast as the could manage to climb into the
chairs with the boosters on them. Trisha brought the big bowl over
that already contained sugar and butter inside and she took a
measuring cup and took out some flour. “Put this in, Edward.”
Edward grabbed it
with his chubby hands and dumped it unceremoniously into the bowl.
His mother smiled and offered the same to Alphonse, alternating
between them until the flour was all inside. She then passed them
each equal amounts of ingredients, and then handed Al the spoon to
stir for awhile.
It brought a smile
to her face the way Ed would hold the bowl and Alphonse would stir it
as best as he could, clearly straining to turn the sticky mess into
batter. She got out some baker's chocolate and began melting it for
the icing. At the sight of the bar, both boys immediately moved to
her side again, begging. “Please mom! Can we have some chocolate?”
Alphonse tried.
“I'm afraid not.
It's not the kind of chocolate you eat like that.” She told them.
“Please?”
Edward added.
“No.” Trisha
replied firmly.
Both boys pouted
and wandered off, no longer interested in the baking process. She
sighed and smiled and went to finish stirring the lumps out of the
batter. Once the batter was in the oven and the icing was made and
cooling in the pantry, she went on to do the laundry.
Edward decided
this was the perfect time to sneak some of the chocolate.
“But mom will be
mad.” Alphonse whispered, holding a stuffed bear to his chest,
looking apprehensive.
“No she
won't...well maybe a little, but not much. You know it!” Edward
answered. “It's nothing, just a little bite. You like chocolate,
don't you?”
“Yes.” Al had
to admit he did like it, even though it was a treat.
“Let's get
some!”
With that, Edward
yanked Al's hand and pulled him into the kitchen. He stopped in the
doorway and looked around, making sure Trisha wasn't there. This was
a clear indication to Al that they were about to be naughty. Edward
slipped over to the counter top, stood on the tips of his toes and
reached with all of his might. He found the chocolate and pulled it
down. He broke off a piece for Al and handed it to him before taking
a bite from the remaining slab.
At the same time,
Al had popped the piece into his mouth.
Both boys gagged.
Trisha laughed
from the doorway and shook her head, walking over and taking the
chocolate from Edward. “What did I tell you boys?”
“Sorry!” They
both chorused before running out the back door to pump some water and
get drinks.
Alphonse got there
first and drank his fill before Edward stepped in and did the same.
They both fell back on the lawn, staring at the clouds. Alphonse
smiled serenely at them, now that the bitter aftertaste was gone from
his mouth.
Edward did as
well, his thoughts drifting to his mother. That had been the first
time she'd laughed in months and for that, the trouble they were in
was worthwhile.
