"You said you'd protect her."
The figure of white stared coldly back at him, and for barely a second longer than any other time before, he met her stare head-on with his own before returning his gaze to Aoko's shaking form which he held close to his own body. He slowly began to rock a bit, hoping to give her that much comfort but knowing it wouldn't change anything.
That sort of pain was something that simply couldn't be erased so easily.
A hand placed itself on Kaito's shoulder, making him screw his eyes shut and clench his teeth as he tried to give Aoko that firm foundation that was sorely needed but was impossible to truly achieve. That pain left her without any true reprieve and just continued on and on without end, a cycle of death and rebirth almost. One that Kaito knew well as he had been forced to experience the same but a short time ago.
But that Aoko should be forced to go through such a thing... when he'd asked that she'd be looked after, kept safe...
Kaito's hand clutched tightly around the hand that had grabbed onto his shirt at the beginning as he gritted out, allowing the fury boiling within him to escape in mere words, "Why betray my trust? Why punish her when you know the one you really want to punish is me? Why put her through this?
He leaned forward at the last question only to be held back by his father, who said quietly behind him, "Don't move."
The younger thief ignored his predecessor and continued to glare at the woman who everyone had been seeking all this time. Pandora. A gem within a gem, they'd said. How true. A mirage covering the truth behind it--a predator hidden by the illusion of an old hag. Something that showed itself on the nights of the full moon. Something that gifted--cursed a mortal with immortality.
A monster that fed from the blood of those mortals, always hungering and never ceasing its eternal hunt.
And what couldn't be more fun than hunting one of its own kind?
Kaito shook himself free from his father's hold and leaned forward again, over Aoko, protecting her, and shouting in challenge, "If you want me, then take me! Don't attack someone not involved! This is between you and me, isn't that right, Pandora? Well?"
The ageless stare continued to look down upon him.
Before a sharp grin broke across the woman's face and she lunged.
Too fast, Kaito thought with numb shock and realization, only able to wrap his arms around Aoko and put himself over her so that he would be the one that would take the damage.
Except no damage came--only blood.
Even before he opened his eyes to stare in horror at the scene before him, he knew whose blood it was.
Toichi kept a hand to Pandora's wrist, holding that hand which had been ready to plunge through his torso from going any farther than it already had. The feral look on Pandora's face did not, however, seem to effect the older Kuroba. Instead, he merely grinned a grin typical of the legendary Kaitou Kid before he spoke, loudly and surely, "I'm afraid you're after the wrong Kuroba there, Pandora. This is, after all, my fight, isn't it?"
Fangs were bared, and Kaito found himself shaken out of his stupor, feeling his own body begin to tremble even as Aoko went still and silent, the pain gone and leaving her unconscious. Fear made his arms shake as he pulled her closer to him, as he stared up at the scene before him, knowing that this was but another price for his foolishness. "D-Dad..."
