Saguru blinked in surprise at who he found in the small room. "Megure-keibu," he said without preamble, "I didn't suspect that you were part of all of this--"

The large man shook his head slowly. "You thought correctly, I have no idea what is going on."

The blond then turned to the two police detectives that he had met when Kuroba had first gone missing. They both shook their heads as well. Well, it certainly put into perspective as to how exclusive this meeting was going to turn out.

Especially when Saguru looked back to make sure that Kuroba was close behind him only to find the thief sticking close to the corner of the walls nearest to the door. He very nearly went over to try to get the boy to calm and sit down but was quickly distracted by a woman and an old man walking in the door, the woman exclaiming, "Oh, so sorry we're late! There was a bit of traffic--"

This time Saguru was able to stop any severe reaction from Kuroba by placing himself between the entryway and the corner. Eyeing the woman suspiciously, the detective said in a terse manner that left no question in anyone's mind that he was not comfortable with the situation, "I'm sorry, but are you the one holding this meeting? If so, I'd kindly like an explanation, and also, if you wouldn't mind, a name to go along with the face."

The bespectacled woman watched him for a moment before smiling a bit. "Of course," she replied in a gentle manner before glancing just behind Saguru to Kuroba. "Pretty much everyone who needs to be here is here. Just one person will be late, however--"

The male detective--Takagi, didn't he say his name was?--spoke up from across the room, "Jodie-sensei, what are you doing here?"

The woman turned to him and immediately had a bright smile on her face as she brought her hands up and said in a bubbly manner, "Ara! I was just in town and thought I should stop by! My, what a wonderful place Tokyo is!"

Saguru was tempted to write her off as a complete nutcase if it weren't for the fact that he already knew the cheerful disposition was an act.

Before anything else could be said, however, the older man spoke up, ceasing all smaller conversations, "If you could all be seated, it would be best to make this meeting go by as quickly as possible before unwanted ears hear of it."

Saguru froze at those words before glancing over to Kuroba who stared at the old man as if he were someone else. Someone who obviously wasn't welcomed to be in that room at the moment. It was only when everyone went to take a seat that the teenaged detective spoke up in order to simultaneously shake the thief from his inner demons and also make the arrangements easier, "If you wouldn't mind, I would like to keep a seat near to the door open for my friend here."

Kuroba looked to him, seeming to try to figure him out.

The others merely nodded and moved to accommodate his request, also leaving two seats near the one closest to the door open.

Giving them all a thankful nod, the blond then inclined his head toward the seat, indicating that the magician should peel himself away from the wall and sit himself down. Kuroba hesitated for a moment but then quickly moved to one of the seats that would not put his back to the door.

Saguru took that seat instead.

Jodie, who'd remained standing while everyone else found their seat, closed the door and locked it with a heavy click. The sound made the Japanese boy tense, and Saguru was quick to reassure him with a look. It didn't do much, but at least Kuroba forced himself to relax so that he would not go leaping out of his seat as he had done before when so tense.

The two teenagers sat next to each other, both awaiting what was to come, both fearing the worst--but only one truly knowing just what the worst could be.

The silence that fell upon the room was then broken, not by a person, but a ring tone.

An overly bright ring tone that made even Kuroba look curiously around for the source of the giddy music.

Again, attention focused on Jodie who laughed in an embarrassed fashion as she pulled out the ringing cell phone. Without pausing for another moment, the woman flipped open the phone and in a manner that only went to prove that the superfluous act was for others benefit and was not, in fact her true self, answered, "Starling here."

Everyone watched as she listened to whoever it was on the phone. Then, without warning, the woman put a hand to her hip and gave a swift nod. "Understood," she said before pulling her phone away from her ear and pressing a button.

Just as she did so, a voice came from the phone, almost familiar except for the fact that Saguru was sitting right next to the person who it sounded like. "Am I on?" it asked.

"Yep!" Jodie said brightly before finding her seat next to the elder gentleman and setting the phone in the middle of the telephone. "You're live on the air, Cool Kid. And we've got everyone here except for--"

The voice huffed a bit. "Figures. He always complains about keeping things from him but the moment I tell him not to be late--"

Takagi and Megure both leaned close to the phone, staring at it in surprise. "Kudo-kun, is that you?" the inspector asked, seeming surprised at this new development.

If Saguru were to be honest with himself, he also found this to be quite an interesting twist in the scheme of things. Kudo Shinichi. The teenaged detective who was highly acclaimed to solve any case placed before him. Just what did he know about the events he somehow also seemed to be entangled in?

The blond glanced over to Kuroba to see how he was holding up only to frown heavily when he saw the distressed look in the boy's eyes that couldn't be hidden by the poker face he currently wore.

"Ah, yes, Megure-keibu," responded Kudo from the phone with a hint of distraction in his voice. "Sorry for the inconvenience and the suddenness of calling all of you together but, well, it seems as though this will be our only change to at least come to a universal understanding of the situation."

The female detective--Satou, wasn't it?--gave the phone an unamused look. "Seems to me that there's more going on than we had thought," she said in a heavy manner as she crossed her arms. The other police officers turned to her, and Satou lifted a hand free as she began to explain, "It makes sense, doesn't it? Here we have a boy who's been missing for months, whose mother was killed by the same person who killed those men at that Kaitou Kid heist. We also have here the classmate of said boy--a detective--who is known to chase Kid."

Shooting a suspicious look over to Jodie and the old man, the dark-haired woman continued, "On top of that, we have the three Tokyo police officers who headed the investigation of the said missing boy--by the request of Kudo Shinichi who had had the boy in his custody for some time before he went missing again. Who also has not been truly seen himself for months."

The other two police officers blinked at her just as a laugh came from the phone.

"You've got a great understanding for the situation, Satou-keiji," Kudo said lightly just before he sobered and continued, "Aa, you're right. They're all connected. Everything. Even the reason why I haven't been seen for so long, why I've requested that my name be kept out of every case I've been involved with since I've pretty much disappeared off the face of the earth.

"Kuroba himself knows better than anyone just how deeply connected all of this is."

Everyone, even Saguru, turned to look at the aforementioned boy who continued to sit there, eyes lowered to his fisted hands which shook just so.

All was silent until a ragged breath came from Kuroba, until he quietly asked, "What are you doing, Kudo?"

No answer came from the famed Detective of the East.

Even Saguru jumped as fists came slamming down on the table, as the thief shouted furiously at the phone, "Just what the hell do you think you're doing?"

As if he were dealing with a child throwing a simple tantrum, Kudo finally answered patiently, "If you'd just calm down and let me explain things a bit more--"

"Are you insane?" demanded Kuroba, hearing nothing of the placating words the other boy had spoken. Aggressively gesturing with his right hand, he continued to shout, "You should know! You should know what kind of people those... those monsters are and yet you're doing something like this, out in broad daylight where anyone can see?"

Kuroba then lifted his eyes to meet quickly with all of the others at the table--except for Saguru's. "Also..." he began again quietly, when there was another moment of silence, "How exactly are we to know if any one of these people can be trusted? How can we know that they don't have ties to those people? If you trusted them with your life, then it wouldn't matter if you showed yourself now, would it? But you're still hiding away! So what is that supposed to mean about these people you expect me to trust--"

"Is Hakuba with you?"

The magician froze at that, staring at the phone, dumbfounded.

Even Saguru had to admit that he hadn't seen that one coming.

Still, he cleared his throat and spoke for the first time since the speaker phone was put on. "Over here, Kudo-san," he said as politely as possible even when he was trying to think of a way to calm Kuroba down so that they could get through this situation without having anything unnecessary occurring.

Kuroba, however, seemed intent to get a straight answer from the hidden detective. "What about Hakuba?" he asked sharply, eyes narrowing and darkening in a manner that made the others at the table uneasy.

"Trust in the fact that he knows what he's doing and he knows when things will get too much too fast," stated Kudo flatly, taking the thief aback. "Or is it that you don't trust in him, either? Is there anyone left that you do trust, Kuroba, or is everyone around you wearing black in your mind?"

There was no response to that.

Kuroba shakily reclaimed his seat, remaining silent, unable to perhaps admit to the fact that Kudo was correct and that because of the things that he had been through, Kuroba could no longer see anyone as an ally.

To further prove his point, the unseen detective continued, "I understand your concerns about all of this. Believe me, I wouldn't have even dared to even consider doing this sort of thing if it wasn't for what has happened to you. I told you before: we're the same whether we like it or not. I could have easily been the one sitting there, staring at the blood that isn't there on his hands--blood of the people he's had to kill in order to keep surviving day to day because those people forced him to make that kind of a choice--"

"Stop," whispered Kuroba quietly, trying to clench his fists and hide them away from view as all the attention focused on him again.

Saguru sat up straighter, keeping an eye on the magician, watching as his breathing became shallower, his eyes became more distant to his surroundings.

"Don't think for an instant that you could have prevented any of it, Kuroba," Kudo pressed, advancing his attack now that he had more of an opening. "There was little more that you could have done besides surviving. No one can fault you for wanting to live, and no one can blame you for doing the things you have done to keep yourself alive because they were the ones who declared war first, who started the body count. You know this better than anyone else--even more than I do myself!

"I am willing to go through with this because there's not many options, if any left." The sound of a deep breath being taken came over the speaker then before a loud exhale came and Kudo continued without much pause at all, "If there were anything else I could do besides continuing to take the attacks as they come, I would gladly do it, but at this rate, things will become worse than they already are. Can you imagine that, Kuroba? If we let things stand as they are?"

Kuroba bowed his head, hiding his face away just as it began to twist into an expression of pain that Saguru had seen once before.

"I trust these people," Kudo said quietly, in a manner that sounded so similar to the pained voice that Kuroba often spoke with. "The ones sitting at the table you're sitting at now are trustworthy. They have done more to help try to stop those bastards than anyone else I know. Even if they never realized that it's all pieces of the same puzzle. I trust these people with my life, despite what you say about my not being there."

Again, silence descended.

Again, it was broken, this time by a low voice that was somehow strong and frail at the same time, asking, "Do you trust these people with the six other lives as well?"

Kudo didn't respond.

And it only took a second for Saguru to realize that Kuroba had purposefully shorted the number of the people present by one.

It didn't take a genius detective to know who it was that the thief was not counting.
