"Kaito..."
He gave a sad smile, tears pricking at his eyes as the true weight of his decision weighed on his shoulders. "I'm thankful, though..." he started slowly, hearing his voice somehow keeping itself steady when all he wanted to do was completely fall to pieces, "That someone remembers that name. It's been a while... since anyone called me that...
"And," he said quietly, looking in those blue eyes that spoke of so much hope and innocence and fear and anguish, knowing he couldn't let things continue for her as things had with him. Because there was no more way out. Not for him, not for her. It had to end there. "I'm sorry."
The knife was in his hand and through her heart before she could say anything in return.
He held her as her eyes went wide, filled with those tears that were falling down her cheeks in silent denial of what was happening. And he continued to hold her as those eyes went dim, death taking her from him just as it had everyone and everything else. Because he'd survived, a monster just like those people who'd put him back in that pit with the young woman who he'd come to love so much, who'd been there with him throughout his life until Kid, until the organization, until... everything died.
Even her.
And even when he was holding nothing more than an empty shell, he didn't cry out. Just allowed his tears to fall silently as he pressed his face into her hair and apologized again and again--
Until a sharp pain lanced through his mind, and he knew no more.
Gin hefted up the rifle with a bit of a noise of disappointment as he watched the body fall, blood erupting from the headshot he'd taken. "This thing is a piece of shit," he muttered before tossing the weaponry to his partner who caught it easily. He then pulled out a cigarette and lit it, inhaling for a moment before asking on the exhale, "Then? Now that your favorite toy is broken, what do you plan to do from here, Vermouth?"
He didn't turn to see the woman's face, nor did he care to see.
She never answered the question, instead, simply ordering quietly, "Dispose of the evidence," before beginning to walk away.
Gin continued to smoke his cigarette for a moment before a tense grin came across his face. "I'd be careful with who you show your back to from now on, Vermouth," he said with a slow drawl. When he heard the footsteps pause, he glanced over his shoulder and finished, "Because next time, it'll be you."
The woman who was the new leader of the organization didn't answer, keeping her back to him, and merely continued walking.
