Her hand reached out to the monocled side of his face.

Kid quickly caught hold of it, commenting in a quiet voice, "I'm not so delirious to the point that I will allow someone, even you, ojousan, to unmask me."

The look he was given would have put him off if he were his normal, civilian self at that moment, but at that moment, all it did was further his conviction. He pushed the hand as gently yet firmly away as he could. "It would perhaps be better," he continued, watching as her expression darkened more, knowing what he was going to say, "if you were to--"

"Idiot!"

The short shout made him pause and then blink. "Aoko-san--?"

She jerked her hand from his grasp, placing it in her lap in a fist while she sat still for a moment, glaring at him. "You are the most idiotic thief I have ever had the misfortune of meeting," she stated harshly.

With a sort of tone that she used to take during the beginning of this terrible farce.

Kid forced a smile, pushing those thoughts away and ignoring the pain in his gut. "Yes, you love to remind me of that, Aoko-san. Now--"

"I wasn't going for your stupid monocle, idiot thief. I just wanted to see if your temperature went down any."

A long moment of silence came at that. During which, Kid closed his eyes and put a hand to his face, allowing a small groan to escape him as he realized just how much of an ass he had come out to be in this scenario. Still, it wasn't as if he could really be blamed. He wasn't used to anyone other than Jii taking care of him when this sort of thing happened.

Then again, nothing like this summer had ever happened before.

Kid was actually ready to begin to apologize for his behavior when he heard a small noise in the dark.

He froze, listening into the dark.

Surely, he wasn't hearing...

"Aoko-san?" he asked, almost timidly, peeking out from between his fingers. Not that he could really see anything. The place was, as always, dim and all he could really see was her silhouette seated some distance away from him. "Aoko-san... don't tell me that you are--?"

"Idiot," she snapped at him, making him inwardly shrinking back. Seeing as he was already lying on the ground, it wasn't like he could do it physically anyway. And what was worse was the fact that he could hear that slight crack in her voice when she continued, "Who the hell would get worked up over a stupid thief like you, anyway? Some stupid fangirl, waving a banner to have your babies or something--"

Kid forced a laugh at that. "Those are... a bit much," he conceded before going quiet, hearing the unsteady breathing coming from the girl but not commenting on it. Let her have a few moments to herself. Though, really, she was right. Who would have those kinds of reaction from a thief like him. He was beginning to wonder. "Really, Aoko-san. I'm fine. I did something stupid and I'm paying the price for it. My injury is healing just fine--"

"It was healing fine before you went out and pulled that stupid stunt!"

He tried not to wince at the tone, glad to still have his hand over his face in case she somehow had a better view of his expressions. "Aoko-san--"

"Jii-san told you, didn't he?" the girl continued, voice firm but still wavering just a bit, making his heart clench a bit. "He told you to rest for at least a month--and you waited two weeks! What kind of idiot are you? I don't know why you do all of this--stealing and everything. I don't know why those men shot you that night, but are you really looking to die by pulling something like that?

"Do you really want to end up like the previous Kaitou Kid?"

He didn't answer, a lump in his throat choking of his words.

Instead, he merely closed his eyes and listened to the silence that came when neither of them spoke again.

And it was better that way, really. Aoko was getting too close. He'd never really thought that such a thing could happen, but it seemed that it was only getting worse the longer she was near him. Prodding, poking, seeing what made him tick... it wasn't that he was unused to that sort of thing... but that she was slowly able to tear away all those masks he wore for the audience he performed for...

It simply wasn't fair.

Eventually, he did find his voice again and cleared his throat before swallowing thickly. "Aoko-san," he said slowly, quietly. "Please do not speak of those sort of things as if I'm not aware of what I'm doing. Even if something similar were to happen to me..."

His voice trailed off.

And they left it at that, neither speaking again that night.
