"Mikoto..."

Mikoto could barely lift her head. She had been sound asleep for the last five minutes in the back of the classroom after everyone had returned to their dorms. Nobody seemed to notice except for Midori, who had been watching to make sure that everyone was paying attention.

"Mikoto..." she said again.

"Y-yes?" Mikoto mumbled, rubbing her eyes until she could see her teacher clearly.

"You were falling asleep in my class again, weren't you?"

Mikoto lowered her head and looked away from Midori, but didn't put it back on the desk, for she had lost the will to go back to sleep. "I-I'm sorry, Sugiura-sensei... I just haven't been able to get a good night's sleep lately."

After erasing her notes from the chalkboard, Midori sat down in the desk in front of Mikoto. "What's the matter? Are you still worried about Mai?"

Mikoto shook her head vigorously. "No, it's not that. I've been having these weird dreams lately, and they've kept me up all night."

"Oh, I've had nights like that," said Midori. "One time, I was working on a term paper for my old college professor, and I fell asleep just as I was about to finish it. I remember something about being attacked by an army of giant pencils, and one of them tried to erase me. When I woke up, I saw one of my roommates rubbing my head with a hardened bathroom sponge."

Midori and Mikoto both laughed.

"Did you ever finish the paper?" asked Mikoto.

"Yeah," said Midori, "but I had a splitting headache for the entire day. I had to remind myself to keep my door locked the next time I had to work on important papers like that."

"Hmm...my dream didn't have pencils or anything in it, but I did see a butterfly. No, actually, I was a butterfly...fluttering around in circles. It's a lot like running, except you have to use your arms more. Everthing was going well, until out of nowhere, one of my cats started clawing at me."

"That sounds rough. Were you able to fight back?"

"I couldn't." Mikoto groaned, ashamed that she had been involved in a fight she knew she couldn't have hoped to win. "He was way bigger than I was, and I didn't have enough time to fly away before my other cat got to me. A few minutes later, I woke up, and couldn't get back to sleep again."

"I think I have an idea that may help you get better sleep and avoid having dreams like this," said Midori. "When you go to bed at night, try filling your head with positive thoughts before you nod off to sleep...of something or someone you really like."

"You mean like Mai?"

"Sure. If it helps you to know that Mai likes you just as much as you like her, you won't need to worry about weird things like being attacked by cats, or pencils, or-" Midori interrupted herself in order to avoid going off on a tangent "-never mind. You get the idea, don't you?"

Mikoto nodded. She didn't perk right up, but at least she understood what Midori was trying to say to her. "Thanks for listening to my story."

"Oh, don't worry...I'm always here to help. Just try to stay awake and pay attention tomorrow, okay? You wouldn't want to worry your friends by falling behind them."
